Question

Wifi speed

Apr 13, 2019 10:37AM PDT

I got a used computer (HP) to replace a Thinkcentre (IBM), Win 7. The HP is more robust - more memory, faster processor, Win 10, etc. Each has a usb wireless network adaptor. No matter which adaptor I use on the HP, it won't connect to the 5G network and it only gets 6.xx download speed and 5.5 upload. The IBM gets 49.xx and 7.9 respectively. What can I check/adjust to see where the issue is?

BTW, the IBM connects to both the 5G and 2G networks with either adapter.

5G is the name for 5G Cellular networks and not out yet.

So you must be asking about 5GHz WiFi. For 5GHz to work the adapter and the router have to agree to work together. This used to be a big issue and can be still. I've lost count of old routers and routers with out of date firmware and oddball settings like hidden SSID.

Try updating the router firmware and the WiFi card/adapter driver. DO NOT USE WINDOWS UPDATE or the Update Driver button. Get the driver from the computer maker or if an add on card, the maker of the card.

When speed testing ALWAYS DISABLE the following. https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

If you have installed any WiFi privacy guard, shield, ANYTHING NOT STOCK I rip all that out to get a stock system with the update sharing off and NO VPN.
