Wierd - what is going on - question.

Oct 27, 2007 10:20AM PDT

Ok... I have been upgrading my OS manually after wiping my HD and installing Tiger from the full upgrade disc (I have a G4 iBook that originally came with Panther loaded).

I went from 10.4.6 to 10.4.10 and also installed the trial version of Pacifist but have yet to even open it. Now, when I restart my computer, a script editor screen automatically opens up and gives this information...

OpnApp.script

Judging by the looks the report it gave you,

My assumption is that something doesn't like your new HD. But if 10.4.6 worked with it, I wonder why 10.4.10 didn't. But if you did a clean install, then there shouldn't be a problem anyway... perhaps the HD is formatted incorrectly for the OS? Look, I'm just going out on a whim with the HD theories, considering that you had to put a new one in it. Who knows...
You know, lately, Apple G4 products have been having issues. My iMac is not taking to Leopard with full confidence, and your iBook can't even stand Tiger anymore. "Sigh"... I'm going to need to buy iLife and iWork '08 now... my iMac is a complete mess. I keep finding stuff in it that is messing with it and extra files that take up space that I will never need. I just need to do a complete restore and install all the new stuff... oh well.
Maybe the G4 is coming to its end soon. Then the G5 will end afterwards, and who knows? Maybe Apple will get frustrated with Intel and move to AMD and so on until there aren't any big brand processor companies around for them LOL.

Do a Spotlight

for any folder with the name Start up (and any variations of that name, like Start-up/startup)

Open the folders and remove whatever you think may be causing the problem.

Don't delete it, just drag to the desktop where it will not run on startup.

When you did the original install of Tiger from the installation disks, you didn't choose to install all the languages as well, did you?
Choosing NOT to install them adds around 5Gb to your free space.

IF you cannot find the culprit, I would be tempted to Initialize (format) and install again.

I gave up !
Oct 29, 2007 1:13AM PDT

I couldn't figure out where the glitch was, despite looking for a day (the script editor message was partially in Portuguese, for goodness sake), so I threw up my hands and reinstalled everything from the original Panther installation discs on through Tiger 10.4.10. Everything appears to be perfect now so I finished by cloning the drive. Yes ! The long national nightmare is over !

question re: organizing applications folder
Oct 29, 2007 3:56AM PDT

If I choose to create new folders in my applications folder and place seldom used programs into that folder to clean up clutter... that should not effect the ability to use that program at all. Should it? Even if that program has an icon in the dock, leaving the program itself, in the applications folder, should allow that program to be used without having to redefine the path from the dock icon to the program location... correct?

Reason why I ask is I had problems with the dock icons not working previously, before I initialized and reinstalled the OS last night. I thought that moving around programs in my applications folder should not affect the actual program.

thanks for any input

It could... I know when using PDF files
Oct 29, 2007 7:34AM PDT

and you move Adobe into a separate folder in the Apps folder, you have to relocate it to use it. May be the same case. Personally, I can't recall having issues with something like this. Try removing the icons of the moved files first and then replace them. That may help some. Moving around the apps shouldn't actually change anything that I know of.

Yes.

Even in System 9, 8, 7... Mac shortcuts [aliases] were never as crude as those ones found in Windows and instead of using a path method of linking files, they use some other fancy method so that if the file is moved (or even renamed if I recall correctly) the alias still works.
