Question

Wierd Downloading Problem....

First here is some info about what I'm using etc....
My computer is a Dell GX280 SFF with Windows XP Pro SP3...
I have & do run regularly & update religously SpyBot Search & Destroy & MBAM...
I also have Avast which is active online & updates automatically...
I defrag regularly...
I don't visit nasty websites...
I am on dial-up with NetZero as my ISP...
My browser is IE7...
Tried IE8 , but it gave me problems with some websites...
IE9 will not work with Windows XP....DAMMMM !!!
I also run infrequently Eset & Trend Micro HouseCall Launcher...
Just to mention a few...
Kaspersky no longer has online scans...
Any suspicious files are uploaded to "Jotti" for a scan before I open them......
I'm verry picky about which emails I open...
ALL the "Undisclosed Recipient" emails are sent directly to "Trash" & deleted without opening...
I use caution opening other emails & NEVER open attachments unless I know they're coming in advance...
ALL checks & scans etc give my computer a clean bill of health...
IF there's ANY spyware , trojans or other malware in my
computer , it IS EXTREMELY well hidden & you are MOST
welcome to ferret it out & kill it for me...
Anything else you need to know , just ask....

Now for my problem....
When I download a file to my computer , the download goes perfectly....
I usually send the file to my desktop...
It will open & function perfectly....
However , When I'm on a website that downloads a file or a page to be viewed online , I get a white page with nothing displayed....
The little download symbol appears on the left bottom side while its downloading....
So I know the download function appears to be working...
IF I hit refresh an image very quickly flashes across the screen...
I managed to capture that image for you to see;=>..
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8148/downloadingscrewup.jpg
It says;=>..
"Initalizing Attachments Panel"
It NEVER does...
So , any idea what is going on here ????
This started awhile ago & is becoming more & more a pain...
What attachments are they reffering to ???
IF you can help me solve this problem , I'll give you my first born...
He 40 years old , so good luck with that....

THANK you VERRRRY much for your anticipated help...

Have a GREAT day & evening....

Answer
I can't see the rest of the screen but that looks like

Some adobe app. Adobe has a download mangler but I can't tell since I only have a small picture.

About Spybot. Today I write toss it and take Grif's advice at 7726-6132_102-5098912.html?tag=posts;msg5099421

Next, why IE? Try other browsers.

Also why use ANY and I mean ANY addons in IE. Toss them all out and try again.

Weird Downloading Problem...

Mr Proffitt;...

Seems like you are the ONLY one who cares about my problems....
THANKS...
The graphic problem in my other thread appears to be holding up THANKS to your advice...So far,so good...
THANKS again...

As far as this additional problem goes....
The entire screen is ALL white before & after that graphic flashes on & off extremely quick when I click on refresh...
There is NO rest of the screen..That's it...
I gave up Adobe years ago (Resource HOG) for Foxit & never looked back...
IMHO there's NO clue that Adobe (Or an Adobe mangler) is involved in this...
My gut feeling is that this is a downloading problem OR websites malfunctions...

I will check out Grif's advice & report back...
That post is for infected computers...
My computer is as clean & NON-infected as you can possibly get...
I already have MBAM & it works very well...
Also I'm very well satisfied with Avast...
I keep Spybot around to keep MBAM & Avast on their toes...

I have tried Google "Chrome" & had problems with select websites not loading at all....
That really should be called Google "Copper"....
I also tried "Opera"...
Could NOT figure out how to use it in ANY way similar to IE...
So that was history also...
I ran IE last night WITHOUT add-ons & there was NO change...
If forum rules permit , I can give you an example website link & you can try it yourself...
Let me know if that is permitted...

THANKS again for your replies...
Any other ideas ???

Later...RM2723

Not yet.

Sorry but the clues are sparse here. While the other post was about an infected machine I find Grif's advice to help in odd cases so that's what I use too.

Sure. Post it.

And to go any deeper I think you could get your HIJACKTHIS log, click the icon to the right of the Happy then paste the contents for a quick look.

Download Problem....

Mr Proffitt;....

I'm downloading HiJackThis...
Even tho I do NOT think this is a malware or infection problem I WILL go along with your advice...
First , I'm going to use Revo uninstaller & take out NetZero & re-install it...
Then go to the site below & try to download the pages that should be viewable online...
Next I will do the same with IE7...
I will post back tommorrow with results...
And post the HiJackThis log...

Here is the link to the site....
When you get there try to download the document...

http://www.pdfdownload.org/pdf2html/view_online.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.howardelectronics.com%2Fdownload%2FManuals%2Fcapwiz.pdf

You will open up a new window to download the document...

THANK you....

Have a GREAT evening.....

Mr Proffitt;....

NO disrespect intended , but,.....
""""Sorry but it worked fine here using Seamonkey (a Mozilla browser)""""
UNLESS you are implying that the problem has to do with IE7...
Duuuuhhhh...Dats why I'm here...Uuuuhhh , it wont work for ME....

I will have some more info for you tommorrow...

Have a GREAT evening...
& THANKS....

If you insist.

Sorry but all I can do is share with what and how it works for me. I don't use IE except for one thing. I also don't seem to have any issue with that site and thought I'd offer the alternate link.

I apologize if that offends anyone.

HiJackThis....

Mr Proffitt;...
The HiJackThis file that I found online has 2 files..
This file is a new "Beta" version & has separate "install" & "execute" downloads...
The one that I had previously was a single file that I ran for a log...
Is this new one going to be a problem ???

THANKS.....

Sorry.

But I just use hijackthis. I'm sure there is a tutorial on use and how to make a log file but to duplicate that here means I would post something that someone else wrote and it could go out of date fast.

Sorry if that software is too hard to use. Did you try AUTORUNS? Some like that better but I don't know if it produces a log file.

HiJackThis...

Mr Proffitt;...

Sorry about the delay...
Local interuptions , etc....
I removed IE7 & all stragglers with Revo...
Went online with the built-in IE6...
Tried our favorite website & NO help...
So I re-installed IE7 & ALL it's up-dates...
So we can rule out IE7 as the culprit...
Here at last is the HiJackThis Log you asked for;=>....
I hope this is the right place for these types of logs....
The reason I say that is because a certain other forum has a seperate thread for malware , virus , etc , diagnosis & remedies...
Methinks you've been here awhile & wouldn't ask me to do anything that would break forum rules...

That link works fine with IE 7 ...

and Windows XP Pro SP3 on this old machine.

It is NOT opening in a Foxit reader window but in a VUZIT window - THAT may be your problem.

Try this link and see if the PDF file doesn't open properly for you since you use Foxit as your PDF Viewer:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf
and this link (for your original file)
http://www.howardelectronics.com/download/Manuals/capwiz.pdf

If the above links work and open your FoxIt Reader, you might contact these people and explain the problem you are having (take a minute to read their FAQ link at the bottom of the page before contacting them) -

Mr Proffitt & Mr ODaniel....

Mr Proffitt;....
I did NOT want to OFFEND YOU , so NO apology is needed from you...
You're doing fine....
I removed NetZero with Revo Uninstaller....
Revo found a whole LOT of straggler items (Entries ??) that I deleted...
I re-installed NetZero & got the same results...
I'll have more info for you later on today...

Mr ODaniel;...

I tried both your links & SURPRIZZZZE , SURPRIZZZZE , SURprizzze...Hahaha
Neither one worked...
Both have exactly the SAME results...
You may be right about Foxit...
I have NO clue what a VUZIT window is....
Could you enlighten me...
I'd be willing to try that...
One way to find out IF it's due to Foxit would be to download Adobe & try it...
Adobe is such a LARGE file to download on dial-up tho , so IF we HAVE to do it , I'll give you an update around Thanksgiving...Hahaha...

THANK you BOTH....

Have a GREAT day....

RE: "I have NO clue what a VUZIT window is...."

VUZIT is the reader built into the first link you offered - it bypasses any PDF reader you have installed.

What version of Java do you have installed? Go to this link to check (if outdated it will offer that info and an opportunity to update). VUZIT makes use of java.

Do you have the latest Windows Scripting Host for XP installed? You can check your version by opening a command prompt and typing CSCRIPT then pressing the enter/return key (I would suggest re-installing ver 5.7 anyway.-
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=47809025-d896-482e-a0d6-524e7e844d81

What happens if you RIGHT CLICK the links and simply select OPEN in MSIE 7? For this computer the one you provided opens in the browser as the web site indends but the ones I provided open in FoxIt Reader.

In FoxIt Reader is Tools > Preferences > Internet showing "Display PDF in Browser" checked?

- Collapse -
Windows Scripting etc

Mr ODaniel;....

I opened "Command Prompt" & got Version 5.7...
I tried re-installing it anyway & I got the message that said:=>..
""Setup has detected that the Service Pack Version of this system is newer than the update you are applying...There is no need to install this update.""
So that's OK....

I have Version 6 update 22 of Java installed...
I have auto updates on Java...
The latest version is Version 6 update 26 & it will NOT install...

I don't understand what you mean by this;=>...
""What happens if you RIGHT CLICK the links and simply select OPEN in MSIE 7?""
I do NOT get "OPEN in MSIE7" at any time I right click on anything !!!
Further info & help on that is needed...

I have opened other websites with Foxit without any trouble...
Just those with that "Initalizing Attachments Panel" that I have trouble with...

Yes , "Display PDF in Browser" IS & WAS checked...

Let me know what's next....

THANKS....

Have a GREAT evening....

RE: "RIGHT CLICK the links and simply select OPEN in MSIE 7"

means just what it says, BUT it can be read two ways - the way you read it is one way while the way I intended it was to RIGHT CLICK on the links and select OPEN from the MSIE7 context menu (as opposed to open in new tab or open in new window)

Could be the fact that your java is holding you up. I had 6 update 25 when I first tried it and updated to 26 - no problems opening your link in MSIE 7

You are saying "I have opened other websites with Foxit without any trouble...Just those with that "Initalizing Attachments Panel" that I have trouble with..." but earlier you indicated that pdf links were not opening in FOXIT -

Mr ODaniel;...I tried both your links & SURPRIZZZZE , SURPRIZZZZE , SURprizzze...Hahaha Neither one worked...Both have exactly the SAME results...

Spybot - Search & Destroy could well be the source of your problem - it may be halting the download of the PDF file. Since Spybot - Search & Destroy is no longer as good an anti-malware application as it used to be could I suggest that you UNINSTALL IT, reboot and try your link again. If you really like it you can always re-install it at a later time.

Right click , links etc....

To everyone who reads this thread;...

When I post a reply to a reply , that reply is posted immediately after the reply I'm answering to...
Then I get an email sometime later that there's been a new post in my thread...
When I come here to check on it , I discover that it's MY post that's "new"...
When you post a reply to a post that is NOT at or near the end of the thread , I get an email that says I have a new post in my thread...
When I check for the new post , I have to search the ENTIRE thread to find your NEW post...
That's a problem...
Confused ???
That is the way this forum is configured....
The posts are NOT chronologically in order...
That means not in order by date & time posted...
So in the future I RESPECTFULLY ask you to post your NEW posts AFTER the LAST post in the thread & I'll do the same & that should simplify things...
THANK YOU ....

Mr ODaniel....

I found another computer & tried the website (& another) we are having trouble with...
That computer worked PERFECTLY on that site & another that I'll bring up shortly...
That computer has IE6 , Foxit,etc..
That narrows it down to this unit...

OK , I finally figured this out;=>...
"""means just what it says, BUT it can be read two ways - the way you read it is one way while the way I intended it was to RIGHT CLICK on the links and select OPEN from the MSIE7 context menu (as opposed to open in new tab or open in new window)"""
When I "RIGHT" click on the link I do get "OPEN" , I click on "OPEN" & when the page opens up , I get the SAME result...Just a full white page on BOTH links....

Quote;...
"""You are saying "I have opened other websites with Foxit without any trouble...Just those with that "Initalizing Attachments Panel" that I have trouble with..." but earlier you indicated that pdf links were not opening in FOXIT"""..Enquote..
Let me try to clarify this a bit....
I did NOT open the websites WITH Foxit...
There are other websites that are pdf websites that open automatically with Foxit (OR Adobe if you have that)(I THINK)...
I do NOT recall saying that ALL Foxit websites were not opening...
I recall saying that the link I provided & you provided do NOT work...
Also this website is giving me the SAME problem;=>...
http://www.schematicsforfree.com/archive/dir/Video/Products
I fix TVs & need to download a manual from this site....

SpyBot is totally inactive till I manually start a scan...
So I fail to see how something that is turned off can be a problem especially since I've had it for a long, long time without any trouble...
Can we rule that out...
From my laymans point of view , that leaves us with Java failing to update...
Whatever is causing the download problem ,ie "Initalizing Attachments Panel" , appears to also be causing the Java problem or vice versa ....
Ya think ???
Any other ideas OR suggestions ???

THANK YOU VERRRY MUCH for your help....

Later....Ron...

It's likely not the cause but you are pushing back on a small item that is part of the process of getting the machine down to size or configurations folk know work.

Since you can uninstall and reinstall at any time, pushing back on this item means that some may not dissect this one any further.

Looking at HJT file....

Mr Proffitt;....

THANKS for looking at my file...
Somewhere along the line I failed to admit to being somewhat of a "newbie"...
I'd appreciate it if you could give me the info in laymans terms....Thank you....

Please start with this;=>...

"""It's likely not the cause but you are pushing back on a small item that is part of the process of getting the machine down to size or configurations folk know work."""
I have NO idea what this means...

IE7 & SpyBot....

Mr Proffitt;...

Reset IE7 to it's factory Defaults... (That was easy)...
Restarted computer...
Removed SpyBot with Revo...(ALL straggler entries gone)....
Restarted computed...
Went to 2 websites , SAME problem !!!!!
This website was my first try & this time it asked for me to allow it to install a FOXIT ActiveX addon which I allowed it to do:=>....
http://www.howardelectronics.com/download/Manuals/capwiz.pdf
That is the follow-up to this link;=>...
http://www.pdfdownload.org/pdf2html/view_online.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.howardelectronics.com%2Fdownload%2FManuals%2Fcapwiz.pdf
So it IS a Foxit website OR it knows I have Foxit installed...

Having fun yet ???

Have a GREAT evening....

Who'd have thunk that when you click on (From Mr ODaniel) ;=>..
""In FoxIt Reader is Tools > Preferences > Internet showing "Display PDF in Browser" checked?"" that the display in the browser WOULD NOT show ????

I know you aren't too fond of SpyBot , but , I am...
Is it OK now to reinstall it ???

MANY , MANY , MANY THANKS for your help...

Clarification needed....

After reading my previous post , I can see that a misunderstanding can easily occur...

It concerns this statement;=>...
""Who'd have thunk that when you click on (From Mr ODaniel) ;=>..
""In FoxIt Reader is Tools > Preferences > Internet showing "Display PDF in Browser" checked?"" that the display in the browser WOULD NOT show ????"""
This does NOT mean that Mr ODaniel asked me to turn ON the display in Foxit...
He meant for me to CHECK & see IF it was turned on..
And it WAS...

Don't want anybody coming down on Mr ODaniel OR ME ...
THANKS....

Let me share one last thing.

The display in browser feature has been hit or miss for over a decade. Why this is, is simple. As Microsoft changes and closes down loopholes, exploits or bugs, this feature seems to break.
