I have an dell dimension pc running xp. Starting about a year ago, the computer periodically has a boot problem. The boot sequence does not get to windows but stops at a bios screen which gives a choice of F1 (continue) or F2 (setup). Continuing to boot doesnt work and the bios setup shows my hard disk as unrecognizable or unrecognized. At that point, I can not get it to boot or recognize the hard disk. However, I can fix it temporarily.
To fix it, I open the case. All of the hard disk cables are still attached firmly. However, I then detach and reattach the hard disk data cable. I do not have to mess with the hard disk power cable.
The next time I turn on the machine after reattaching the cables, it will still stop at the bios screen but F1 works to send it to the windows splash sceen and then to windows.
That is all I do and it seems to work for a while (sometimes one boot sometimes a few days). Eventually, however, it stops working again. I have done this over 30 times so it is not the case that it is a single incidence of a loose cable.
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this or how to actually fix this. It is hard to open the case every time I need to boot my machine. I have tried reflashing the bios and reinstalling windows.
