Question

Widescreen on Fullscreen?

Aug 10, 2013 3:07AM PDT

my mail, and a lot of web pages seem designed for widescreen monitors, is there any way I can get all of that screen to display on my fullscreen monitor, without having to constantly scroll back and forth?
My mail is especially annoying, because the ad banner down the right side insists on being down the middle of the page instead, blocking messages, buttons, etc.

Yes and no

Yes and no. It is possible, but it requires the site designers to develop pages using proportional sizing instead of fixed. Bob's solution is certainly one worth considering, though personally I prefer Firefox and AdBlock Plus. The Firefox engine allows AdBlock Plus to prevent the browser from even downloading the ads at all, Chrome based solutions basically render the page twice. The first time they render it with the ads, the second time strips the ads out because Chrome's engine lacks the ability to let extensions interact with it directly. Maybe they'll add this functionality with the new Blink engine, but who knows. Firefox also makes it possible to use the excellent security enhancing extension NoScript. There are some work-alikes for Chrome, but Chrome cannot filter out inline scripts embedded directly into a webpage, so there's kind of a gaping hole in the security offered by all of those NoScript-like extensions for Chrome.
