Wide angle lens for canon A75...

Mar 12, 2005 2:16PM PST

Im looking for a wideangle fisheye-type lens on ebay and im not sure which to buy or not. Could any of you aid me on what brand or lens to get? I asked 4 different stores if the lens adapter (for the wide angel lens) is actually 52mm, because thats what my camera takes. im afraid they would send me a 47mm or something because they usually dont have a pic of the adapter and never the size.

(im not trying to sell the item)
would

Conversion Lens

I assume you already have the Canon Adapter tube that would support such a lens. The tube supports 52mm filters/lens.

Most conversion lenses have a native mounting thread.
Then they use step-up rings to fit other size mounts.

What this advertisement does not tell you, is the size of the mounting threads on their lens.

This is important to know.

Based on the price, I suspect that it has a small thread size, something like 37mm. This means you will get the lens and an adapter that changes 37mm to 52mm.

Such a small mounting size can result in vignetting of your pictures. i.e. dimming or clipping of the corners.

Here is an example ad for a conversion lens. Note that it tells you the native mount size. Which in this case is 52mm. Even this lens can be fitted to other cameras by using step-up/step-down rings.

So, when shopping for such a lens, find out the native mounting size. If it is close to your thread size, it can be altered with adapter rings.

If it is not close to you thread size - pass it by.

thank you for your help...

I do not have a lens adapter, but nearly all of the ebay lens sales do inclue an adapter. only one seller on ebay lists the mounting size..
"mount thread: 37mm" with a filter thread of 47mm.
So i assume that's the native mounting size that you speak of.
The other 2 or 3 auctions just have "Lens front Thread 67mm" but they do say it is for the Canon powershot A75 AND they say it includes a lens adapter.

What should i do?

quick question
Mar 13, 2005 1:39AM PST

Since the lenses that have a front lens size of 67mm, the actual mounting size would be 52mm instead of 37mm (which i dont want cause of vignetting)?

There are adapters and there are adapters

If the conversion lens has a front filter thread of 67mm, it is a good sign that it will not cause vignetting.

However it does not necessarily mean that the mounting threads are 52mm. But probably something close. So it may need an adapter (step-up/step-down ring) to make that lens thread match 52mm.

A "Conversion Lens Adapter" fits around the camera's lens. Many people call it a tube. Look at the front of the A75 and you will see a ring around the lens barrel. There is a button included. Press the button and the ring can be removed. This is were the "Conversion Lens Adapter" fits.

Check you owner's manual; for full instructions.
It is probably located near the back of the manual in the Appendix.

This Conversion Lens Adapter sells for $20 at Canon, other sources sell a similar product for at least $14.

..............

I doubt that a vendor will include a $14 Conversion Lens Adapter with an advertised wide angle conversion lens.

I would assume that the conversion lens does not have a 52mm lens mount and they are including an adapter (step-up/step-down ring).

.............

You need more information from the vendow, as to exactly what he is selling.

Will Appreciate Some Feedback

Since we are dealing with an unknown, I would like to know the outcome of your purchase.

When you get you lens, let us know what type of adapter you received.

Someone else may have a similar situation in the future.
Pass along the knowledge, we all like to learn.
