Actually I think I'm going to keep my computer hardwired to the router.
What I need to get addressed first is setting up a network, I want to be able to share files within all 3 computers.
So here's my Wi-Fi story. Scroll to the bottom if you want to read the actual question.
A couple of months ago I read on CNet about Wireless technology without being too impressed. I thought it would take years before that kind of technology would actually become accesible to the home user. I was so wrong.
In my house I had 2 desktops. Both Windows XP Professional running systems, connected to a Linksys Switch which provided wired broadband and network for my sister's computer and mine. Time elapsed and the switch began to fail, so I decided to let my folks know we needed a new one, so I started my research.
After countless pages and consulting several friends, I decided to go with the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G just because my dad told me to pick the one I thought would be the most appropiate (aka I had unlimited money to spend on it). Some told me to go with the B because G would simply be too much. I'm so glad I followed my instincts. I also ordered a Linksys PCI Wireless-G just to test it, but I determined to hardwire everything.
The shipment from Amazon.com arrived. The router was pretty easy, I hard wired everything into it and it worked perfectly. But the trouble began with the card. I hard-wired my computer (the one closest to the cable modem and the router) and tried installing the card in my sister's pc. I gave up after several hours, and I settled for the wired network, thinking I had spent a lot of unnecessary cash.
Enter new Toshiba laptop with Wireless. Just for the kicks I turned on the wireless switch in my new laptop and to my surprise, I was on the net. I was instantly fascinated by this, it took several days for me to log back into my desktop.
Now that I tested it works, I want to do the same with my network. I want to have all three computers with wireless internet and wireless network, so I can share files.
Is it recommended? What should I buy? I have Windows XP SP2.
This is what I think I should do:
1) Install current card in my desktop.
2) Buy new card and install it in my sister's desktop.
And that's all I should do in order to have wireless internet, if I'm correct. However, how do I setup a wireless network? I tried using the Windows XP SP2 button in Control Panel, but I realized there wasn't a network, given that I only had the laptop with the wireless card.
Thanks for reading my experience, and hope someone can hook me up with some Wi-Fi Advice =)
