Question

Wi-Fi Extender Internet Connection Cutting Out.

Dec 31, 2018 1:56PM PST

We have an Arris TG1682G router in our house, and I am connected to it via a TP-Link Wi-Fi Range Extender. I'm plugged into the extender through an Ethernet cable. We use Bright House.

My problem that I'm having is that when I am playing an online game, every once in a while my internet will cut out and back in for a few seconds, which in turn disconnects me from my game. Not a lag spike. My internet actually fully cuts off for 5-10 seconds and I will get disconnected from my game. This will happen once every hour or so when I'm gaming for longer sessions.

I've tried several things.

1. I've tried connecting to my extender's network with a Wi-Fi adapter instead of Ethernet.

2. I've tried completely changing to a different Wi-Fi range extender. (Netgear Ex6100v2)

3. I've tried resetting my range extender.

4. I've tried connecting to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks individually.

I don't think it's a problem with the router because my roommate's internet seems to work just fine from his room, which is only slightly closer to the router.

I have my Wi-Fi range extender in my room because there are no outlets between my room and the router that I can use. I just use it because it basically acts as a faster Wi-Fi adapter.

Another thing I've tried is just connecting directly to the router using my Wi-Fi adapter. Still get the same problem.

I get really good internet speeds other than that one issue though, and I get no lag or anything in between the drops.

Additionally I am running Windows 10 on a desktop PC.

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

What if I get the same problem with a USB WiFi?

I've tried just using a USB WiFi and connecting directly to the router and I still get the same issue. I'm just trying to figure out what the problem could be.

The cause for the cutout is not in your posts.

If we open up to "all possible causes" you leave me with little choice but to write google this issue.

I don't like that and try to work with what information members supply. Some get agitated over revealing all the data. A Web Speccy report might help but even that doesn't get into the PC as to drivers and settings.

So keep sharing details and maybe something will find a connection to a known problem.

In parting when I work these I head back to a very stock OS. Any AntiVirus, any app that steps into networking is usually removed as we work the BIOS, Drivers and more.

Wi-Fi Extender Internet Connection Cutting Out.
Jan 1, 2019 3:01AM PST

Make sure the extender is connected to the power adapter provided and into a live power outlet.
Make sure the extender is within the Wi-Fi range of the wireless router and client device is connected to the extenders network.
Open the extender GUI using www.mywifiext.net.
If it’s asking for Email and Password, please type the email and password that you have setup for extender account. Otherwise if it’s asking for Username and Password, by default Username is admin and Password is password. If the default password is not working you might have already changed the password. So use the password that you have changed to.
Check if the extender has the latest firmware. If it does not have the latest version, upgrade the firmware to the latest.
Usually if there is a new firmware available, there will be an alert for new firmware at the top to the extender GUI. Click on the alert to update the firmware.

Extender is plugged into power strip
Jan 1, 2019 4:22PM PST

I have my extender plugged into a power strip currently, not directly into a wall outlet. Could that actually be an issue? I figured as long as it's being provided power it doesn't matter, but I don't know for sure.

Check Extender antennas

Check the antennas attached to Extender. Antennas should not be loose or it connected properly.
Or try to reset your extender once more.
