Question

Wi-Fi Disconnect - PC End

Sep 4, 2016 2:38PM PDT

Hi all,

I've been trying to diagnose a problem I've been having with my wireless connection on my desktop PC. Using a Netgear N300 Wireless Network Adapter, I can connect to my home network (hosted through Comcast, who has a technician coming this week - fingers crossed) but the connection can't be sustained for more than an hour or so before it says that there is no active internet connection, yet still reports that it is connected to the network.

I've tried connecting to the network with other devices with success and no drop-outs so I've narrowed down the problem to this PC. I will have difficulty showing the problem to the technician since they're on a schedule and can't stay to see whether or not the problem persists, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

if you moved the adapter to another computer and the problem is now on that computer, then most likely there the problem is with the adapter, not the computer.

I may have misread your reply

when you say you replaced the adapter, you tried another adapter??? if so, did you do a power cycle on your router?

There's not much to work with here.

I see the N300 but no mention of distance or if the new adapter is the same. When we see this we start at no more than 20 feet.

brand new adapter

i replaced the old adapter with an entirely different one i had never used before and all the drivers are up to date. the router is no more than 15 ft. away from the pc and when there is internet access the signal is perfectly strong with no slow-downs.

Since it's USB

There are other reasons for seemingly random drops. WiFi even at less than 20 feet can still have issues. It may be time to consider Ethernet cable or a powerline bridge.

I don't duplicate the web about power settings.

random drops?

I cant wrap my head around why that would be possible considering my other devices (laptop, smartphone, friends phones and laptops) never experience this problem. if it were possible id have connected using an ethernet cable a long long time ago, i can only troubleshoot the wireless connection. are there any other reasons why it would continuously drop?

Well,

There's something defective in the PC. That's vague but given only what we know so far maybe a new motherboard?

For me I've resorted to those WiFi to Ethernet devices or powerline bridges in such cases. Repair time is costly so we throw hardware at it.
