Wi-Fi

Excuse my ignorance, but is wireless internet the same as Wi-Fi?
My daughter purchased a laptop for college that is Wi-Fi capable, does she need to do anything with her laptop so she can start using this feature or is it ready to go out of the box?
Thanks for your help, this tech stuff is not my cup of tea but I guess I'll need to start learning this.

Wifi may not be Wireless Internet. Example? WiMax.

Your college will have more information on what they require... But if you have a Wifi 802.11g card, it's likely to work out fine.

I will check with my daughter on this and have her ask the college also.
Is there something she will need to do to the laptop so she can use Wi-Fi?
Does something need to be "activated" in her computer?

You would need a Wifi card and and operating system that supports that card and set it up per the college's request.
