Resolved Question

why win xp still sluggish after repair/install

Dec 26, 2011 12:25PM PST

The repair/install procedure by booting the program cd restored my non- operative xp computer (Probably disabled by a virus). After performing an ipconfig /flush dns and ipconfig /renew the computer went from being very slow to moderately slow. The computer is still not very useful.

Usually when I invoke a program, I get a dropdown window stating: "Microsoft feels Synchronization has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about the problem."

Can anyone offer a clue what is going on?

Thanks.

Bob:
Thanks for responding. In my many attempts to perform the xp repair install, I did get a message: "Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad, Backup and Replace ". So maybe I do have the IDE DMA bug.

I don't know if I can still find a good IDE HD. If so, since I can now access all the files, I can retrieve all the data. I also have a back up Ghost image on a 2nd IDE HD, before the xp went south in the same computer. I can try restoring the image to a good replacement HD. The computer is a desktop I assembled using an Intel D845PEBT2 mobo (I think it supports SATA HDs)and a Pentium Pro 2.5 GHz CPU. I have a Win7 computer using an i7 cpu, and a Gigabyte mobo but am not too happy with the virtual xp in Win7 since it does not support engineering grade graphics for CAD programs. Also, I was thinking of assembling a new desktop installed with my present XP Pro OS.

When a drive fails that test, I replace the drive. After many years I don't find it wise to keep such a drive.
