job of the president has changed in the perception of Americans. The basic functions presided over by the first administrators have developed into a job of babysitting every component of every citizen that affects that person's "right" to the pursuit of happiness...and anything less than the 100% achievement of happiness is considered a failure that can be blamed on the president of ones own choice...past, present or future. Add one more item to the list of things from which there is no escape besides death and taxes and that is listening to daily gripes.
Why the low poll numbers ???.Here's my opinion.
As background,
Ref (1): No one person is gifted with the expertise to personally properly address every problem confronting this Nation and its citizenry;
Ref (2): Selecting and appointing ?staff? must be focused on the ?subject matter? of an office or agency, and related real work experience of the individual;
Ref (3): Reasonable and necessary oversight can be achieved without micro-management;
Ref (4): A basic proposition of leadership, ?You can always delegate authority, but you can never delegate responsibility.
IMO, President Bush fully accepts Ref (1) as it applies to himself, but has failed to take advantage and benefit from such recognition during Ref (2) activity. Nepotism has been alive and well evidenced by his personal appointments of personal and political acquaintances. These kinds of appointments tend to surround one with ?yes men?, a recipe for a troublesome administration. He failed with respect to Ref (3) by tolerating disregard of Ref (2) by those he appointed, when they made similar preferential appointments, and when they failed Ref (3). He failed to observe Ref (4), with respect to Ref (2) and Ref (3), which accounts for his ?poll numbers? today.
Only history, written by the next couple of generational historians, will judge if or not his presidency was a failure.
