Why the 16:9 ratio?

by ksoiehawo / September 15, 2004 11:28 AM PDT

I don't get why most large sized TV's now only come in 16:9 ratio... It screws up a lot of the programs on everyday TV, especially sports. I can't even find any places now where they sell 4:3 large sized TV's.

Especially sports like live football? 4:3 maybe what you see but is that what is being broadcast?

I think the reason might be pretty soon all HDTV will be in that format. I haven't been to a movie for a long time but I think most of them are in that format now, right?

Tv manufacturers decided to go 16:9 because that is the aspect ratio of High Definition Tv and most Dvds. This season all football games on Fox, Espn Sunday night games, Monday night games and select Cbs games are in HD. You could still find 4:3 projections online, but most retailers don't sell them anymore.
