Why pictures don't show in Hard drive

Hello all, when I take a picture and transfer it to my computer, the pictures don't show. A icon appears that represents the photo, but not the actual picture.
Using Win7 O/S 64 bit -- yes, I downloaded the software.
I think it has something to do with file association.

Camera: Photosmart 935 by HP
Software: Win7 64 bit

Need more information

How do you transfer the picture to your computer?
1. Use USB cable from camera to your computer and use what software to do the transfer?

2. Use card reader by taking camera memory card and putting it in the card reader?
And you are using what capacity memory card (2gig, larger capacity, or less capacity)?

Also what type of picture file do you get?
i.e. xxxx.jpg or something else (what?)

When you say you "downloaded the software" do you mean you downloaded Windows7 O/S 64 bit?

re: Why pictures don't show in Hard drive

What's the view setting for the folder that the pictures are in? "Details", "List" and "Small Icons" only show the generic "landscape" icon for jpegs. Whereas "Tiles", "Medium Icons", "Large Icons", and "Extra Large Icons" show a thumbnail of the image.

Transfer with usb cable.
I tried changing the views from Tiles to Medium Icons, etc. and pictures don't show. In order to see the pictures I have to click open with a photosoftware program like Photoshop or MS Picture.
