Why ,Only Recently, Does Fwd Slash...

by tobeach / March 29, 2008 4:18 PM PDT

used in body of post end post??

I'm sure it's something to do with Java rules (which I know not one thing about) but didn't happen months or years ago in my posts here.

Example: I just got a new car with a/c, P/S P/W. It doesn't do it in this forum & this post but DOES (@ 1st only in XP Forum but NOW in Sec,Virus & Spyware as well).

On those forums I must use full word "with" or post ends with 1st forward slash there-in when I click preview post. Doesn't seem to happen on other sites where I post.

I'm using Sea Monkey 1.1.9 with Sun Java JRE SE 1.4.2_17 (Both latest suitable for my system).

Simple work around (such as always leave a space post the slash or ?
Or a bug in those forums to be fixed? Thanks in Advance! Sandy ConfusedGrin

I can't reproduce this.
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 29, 2008 9:13 PM PDT

Hi Sandy.

Have a look at;
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=238615&messageID=2741080#2741080

I've used your sample, eg I just got a new car with a/c, P/S P/W and added a few words after that.

It seems to post ok.

How does it 'end' the post when you try it? Does the post end as soon as you type a forward slash, or when you try to post it? What does 'end' mean? What window is displayed when it is ended?

For information I previewed my post first, (I always do), then hit Submit post.

Can you try it again, (eg as a reply to my post above), and let us have a screen print?

Also, try it with Firefox or IE, and see if you can reproduce the problem with a different browser.

Hi, Mark! The Problem Seems To Be...
by tobeach / March 30, 2008 4:43 PM PDT

although when I type in my post to box my full post appears there, when I click "preview post" the result is only part of the post I typed.

The preview of post shows all I typed until it encounters the 1st place in the post where a forward slash appears. The remainder of typing after that 1st forward slash point is simply not there.

I seem unable to reproduce myself it at present moment. I just attempted it at A/V board using several variations and all seemed to come up OK! Last time it happened was 25/03/08 from searching my past posts where I mentioned it but fixed/altered it before posting, so no example there.
A post Easter Miracle I guess!!!

Sorry to have tied up your time on a wild goose chase as it seems but I do appreciate your taking time to try & help & will ask again if/when I see it. I'll post the defective post so I can give you a link to it. Thanks again!! Sandy Grin

Just Attempted Post In A/V Sec & This Time...
by tobeach / March 30, 2008 5:47 PM PDT

post aborted at link for Norton removal tool rather than at a slash.
Here's post before preview:

Wish You Luck in Your Quest....

but please don't attempt to un-install Norton without having the "un-install tool" >>>for your version (Trial?)<<< on hand (or on USB Flash). The tool is quite small.

Symantec link was "here" .All gone after Http: In THIS case I suspect
link was too long? I can't include ANY of the link addie after Http:
If I do full link, this post fails also.

I also tried describing this ahead of link problem in this post where-in I actually used double slashes in text and everything after those slashes failed to appear. Never got as far down as the link.

I know link itself was ok 'cause I copy & pasted it into my SM Browser & clicked "Go" and it landed where it should (at Symantec removal Tool Page).

Balance of intended post which failed:

AS suggested you may want (after un-install) to run a "search on machine" for Norton & Symantec entries (if any left).

Remember to be disconnected from net & suggest restart machine after un-install BUT before installing AVG (This post stopped after A(slash)V)( Note: This is basically ONLY A(stopped after the V following slash)V they also offer an anti-spyware program for other things). You may want to run disk clean-up &( stopped after slash &o)or defrag at end of successful process to regain space. Good Luck!!!! Grin End.

Short of having NO slashes in post or links can't get full post. Has taken an hour of revisions just to get this post out past preview.

That test(?) post I mentioned was at A-V board Front page, Blueslady Post: Help with downloading Ave ... posts 20 & 21.

I am going to attempt copy & pasting my full post as last here incl. all to see if same problem is in IE? (after preview apparently it is !!) :

Hmmm, quite confusing.
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 30, 2008 7:21 PM PDT

Got me stumped Sandy! Happy

I wonder if, in 'this instance' it is anything to do with the 'right and left' half diamond brackets you use, (sorry, I don't know what else they are called).

The link to your post in the Spyware forum is here;
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6132_102-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=288043&messageID=2741658#2741658

I'm going to type >>> <<<< then the link again, below;
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6132_102-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=288043&messageID=2741658#2741658

Does this appear as it should?

In reply to: Hmmm, quite confusing.

I think I have it. Everything from after http:// was deleted. Good job because I was swearing a lot, Devil

Those half diamond characters are what is normally used in HTML web page building for opening and closing anchors and attributes, including links.

These forums don't use the half diamond but use the square brackets instead, eg .

I added a few spaces to allow the typing to appear.

But the half diamond brackets are still relevant, and your use of the left hand bracket after the right hand bracket is interpreted as an open anchor. This should work, << >>, but this may not >> << because any links in the post after << are waiting for the anchor to be closed.

More testing below, so I will sign off now.

Mark

<< >> http://www.google.com

The one below has the same link after the left hand bracket.

>> << http://www.google.com

That last one and this sentence should have disappeared.

Well, that sort of worked the way I thought.

In reply to: Ahhh!

But I still had open left hand brackets in the post so I am surprised any links worked.

I hope that helps though.

Hi Again, Mark! I've Always Called Those....
by tobeach / March 31, 2008 3:53 PM PDT

left & right arrows...>>>>tomatoe/tomato...<<<< & I use them for accenting a word or phrase (rather than "Bold"). They, of themselves, never seemed to cause a problem in the past either here or elseware.
Sometimes the post I use them in has a http link at bottom & sometimes
they don't (just straight text). End part 1 of this post (to be continued...). Grin

Part 2: Above With Straight Text : No Problem.....
by tobeach / March 31, 2008 4:15 PM PDT

and on other boards I have often used them in posts with multiple Links following with no effect on expected post result. One board is "powered by PhpBB" (not sure about uppercase & lower case) where there is no problem. An example is here:
http://www.dancingcactusimports.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=805

An example of using them in a post including multiple links is here:
http://www.dancingcactusimports.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=801

I am very hesitant to use Brackets [ ] because the Singular Java trick I do know (showing Words instead of the showing link itself)does involve brackets plus a Fwd slash & I would expect they might cause a problem if scattered willy-nilly. I note I have NOT had to rework either of these posts (so far) due to preview problem.

I normally post late at night >>>local time<<< & wonder if C-net does service/maintanance (SP?)at that time of day/night and shuffles of to older backup service while doing so?? By chance some of my posts are on normal & some on the backup unit which may have this problem?

There It Goes Again....I Think Your Point....
by tobeach / March 31, 2008 5:04 PM PDT

may be correct as I tried a few other words & a http link & they seemed to test ok. Example I wrote/previewed/tested this test link to sans.org:
http://isc.sans.org/ which seemed to come thru a-ok!

Still wonder why ONLY at this site/these boards? Why ONLY in the last 30 days or less?

The only other change I've noticed here in the time frame (beyond new float ads in post areas: Ugggh!) is that previously I could use back button to go from current post back several pages passing "post data notice" without problem but now I hit post data note and cannot go back further period (expired from cache).

I would sometimes use this to start with an Advanced search results showing several posts. I would go to 1st post, reply & instead of going to replied to board, would back button to search results again and reply to the next or other subsequent post still listed in the search results. This I seem unable to do now. Don't know if this is appropo of anything to this problem but only other change I've noted in time frame.

Anyway, I guess the work around becomes, dont use any fwd slashes in text where arrows might be needed. Example: C:>Program Files>Lavasoft>Adaware. Here use "Copy & Paste" NOT: Copy/Paste. Grin

Above worked! How about left arrows? Test:Failed! Gone after P of paste. Guess that's it then... ONLY right Arrows! Thanks Grin
C:<program Files<Lavasoft<Adaware. NOT Copy/Paste?

Getting complicated.
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 31, 2008 6:21 PM PDT

It's getting complicated isn't it? Happy

I also use the > brackets when typing paths, eg Goto Tools > Folder options > View tab, or whatever and have never had a problem.

What if I reverse it? Tools < Folder options < View tab.

Does that work or is this sentence deleted?

That worked in Preview. So, next example.

Tools < Folder options < View tab then copy/paste into the field.

Does anything disappear?

Ahh!

Got it, I think. Quotation marks!
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 31, 2008 6:34 PM PDT
In reply to: Getting complicated.

This failed;

Tools < Folder options < View tab then copy {with a forward slash} paste

But, enclose it all in quotation marks works;

"Tools < Folder options < View tab then copy/paste into the field" works OK

So, now perhaps we can do other things?

>>>>>Local time<<<<<<<< then at "11/12am" the sun came out

works, suggesting we need to enclose forward slashes in quotation marks, if they appear after a left arrow.

My head is beginning to hurt.

I think a mixture of 'right/left' arrows will work if anything with a '/' is enclosed in double or single quotation marks, unless the '/' is in an http link.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
