Why Not Asus?

Sep 28, 2005 6:36AM PDT

I think I am amazed that I'm JUST NOW discovering this brand, with all of the advertising from major manufactures like Dell and Gateway and Apple and to find a lappy that's customized for me for less than 2 grand?

My question is...why aren't many people spreading the good news about Asus, even though it's apparently a trusted brand for motherboards. Is there something wrong with it? I saw an okay review for a PDA that wasn't completely positive, but that's it....

Here's my dream specs (I've posted these before):

My Dream Lappy is < $2K (ASUS Z71V-S)

This is actually an extreme version of the specs I need:

ASUS Z71V - S

Processor: 1.73GHz Intel Pentium M 740 (Sonoma) w/2MB L2 Cache - 533MHz

Memory: 1.0GB DDR2-533MHz SODIMM (1x1024MB)

Hard Drive: 80GB 5,400RPM HDD

DVD/CDRW Drive: Combo 8X DVD/24x10x24 CD-RW w/Software

Wireless LAN: Built-in Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 Dual-Mode 802.11B/G LAN

Main Battery: Smart Li-ion Battery: 5.5 hours

MS Windows OS: MS Windows XP Home w/SP2

Why Asus?
Sep 28, 2005 6:41AM PDT

No visible support channels. No service centers for repairs, parts.

While a great name, the lack of support channels makes this line one to steer clear of.

-> How could you tell anyone to consider this line?

So I've heard...

Why does it have a warranty...

This seems like your average site to me -- there's an address, 800 number...have you used Asus before?

I've had to deal with them on mobo support

The experience was lacking. Their online support is crap. They have a bot that sends form letter responses based on keywords you enter into a text chat window. Phone support included very long wait times only to learn sometimes that the "person" handling wireless issues was out and would call back...but never did. They always seemed overwhelmed. After multiple calls I spoke to level 2 or maybe 3 support who was very helpful and knowledgable. All of the reps spoke english and were kind, but not always helpful.

Please research this one.

This name is well known, but if you didn't find the answer to your questions then you've proven my point here. With Dell and others I have the phone number in one or two mouse clicks. These off brand names are considered only for those that like to take a chance.

For me, I want boring, working units with sprawling web sites, drivers and more.

Knock yourself out with one of these but I wouldn't go near one unless it was less than 1/2 price of what I can get from Dell, Hp and others.

asus isn't bad IMO

look around notebookforums.com and go to the asus reviews and general section. lots of owners and if anything would go wrong, just visit there. take a look at the new z71 refresh with the x700 in it. (supposedly out performs the 6600GO)

be careful where you buy
Sep 29, 2005 5:41AM PDT

If you look deeply enough on the ASUS website you'll find a listing of dealers (resellors) who ASUS thinks are exceptionally good... this isn't the gen'l page that shows all the delaers with a web presence. In the research that I did on ASUS two resellors kept coming up, ProPortable and AGearnotebooks. In the end, well I haven't gotten to the end yet (but I'm leaning real heavily towards the new HP Dv4000 with the ATI X700 video card), I'll likely go with one of the big boys because I expect they will be around as long as my new notebook and I'll be buying and getting support directly from the maker.

That's where someone suggested an Asus. I would hope they know what they are talking about.

Why not the new Dv4000
Sep 29, 2005 10:18PM PDT

Yesterday I ordered my new Dv4000 with the ATI X700 GPU... a very nice video card. Got it configured pretty nicely for $1220.11 (including a free second battery). The price did include a 6% academic discount, but doesn't include the $50.00 rebate that I'll be sending in after recept of the machine. This was, by far, the best deal I've found on a fairly high end machine.

The DV4000 only got a 6.8 on here, and I'd also like dedicated VRAM for gaming

Yes, that's VRAM is the point

Expand your horizons (-: Read the following article:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1858647,00.asp

You will see that the Dv4000 now has the ATI X700 GPU, one of the good cards. I beleive you'll find the article you referenced was reviewing the Dv4000 with the Intel 900 intergrated graphics package.
