Question

why my new dell inspiron 17720 monitor is too dark?

May 24, 2013 4:24AM PDT

I have just purchased a dell inspiron 17720. The machine has 17 inch monitor. It is purposely designed for gaming. It has great graphics from Intel and dedicated 2 gig graphics from nvidia. Yet, compared to my old laptop, videos shown always show deep black colours making viewing video troublesome. Please, i need help because i'm even thinking of reselling the laptop and never think of buying a dell product again. I'm damn crazy here.

I was going to check reviews but could not find a dell inspiron 17720 laptop or monitor.

You may want to clarify the model number.

well, in my haste i made a mistake in describing the model of laptop i bought. this is the full specifications...

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3230M processor (3M Cache, up to 3.2 GHz)
Windows 8, 64-bit, English
17.3" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display with Anti-Glare
8GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
750GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (even though the size i see is 699 gig)
8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GDDR5 2GB
90 days Premium Phone Support + 1 Year In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis
7.23 lbs

playing games with it is not too bad but watching movies become a problem. There is a constant deep black color that makes watching movies that have night settings a hell. I have tried adjusting the inbuilt Intel graphics and have even tried setting the nvidia as a primary or default graphics but to no avail. compared to my old dell latitude, the color is too clearer. I must say the images are sharp to my liking but the whole thing looks extra dark. I have tried the brightness, gamma etc but can't make any headway. is it because the laptop is new because this is the first time i am buying a brand new laptop and i don't know why such a thing is happening. hope now i can get the required help. thanks to all of u;

OK, that helped.

I'm leaving this with my comment that I've found all Inspion LCDs to be barely acceptable. They are not outstanding compared to other better LCDs but tend to be on the light or dark side (contrast or brightness) and in short are a value display.

Nothing is wrong here as the Inspiron line is the good value machines. If you find it of too low value you should look at the XPS, Latitude and other models.
