she passed the math portion of the test on her first try but has been unable to pass the English section.

?I have been working really hard to go to college,? Valenzuela said Wednesday during a news conference. ?I have been on the honor roll for the last four years. ...

and

?We'll have to find some way to teach everybody English, including those who just come into the country from another country,? he said. ?Otherwise, it makes no sense. How would you like to be tested in Armenian if you don't know Armenian??

if the girl has been studying in english, and made the honour roll (which i understand to be an academic standing and not a ''she behaves well in class'' rating) four years running in english....
why should the test be in ''armenian''

Not watching other news sources I had to search for this link. Fox News is where I heard about it. Just the same old complaint, we want to be Americans but you need to put everything in Spanish for us. I believe it said if you were in Armenia, the test would be in Armenian?

How would you like to be tested in Armenian if you don't know Armenian?

my point was:
she made 4 years honour roll in english? (read armenian)
so why couldn't she pass the english (read armenian) test?

if i went to study in a country where english wasn't the mother tongue, was a grade A student, i would expect to pass a test in that countrys language...

I would like to know how she got on the honor roll ...

... if she can't pass this test in English?! Honor roll is certain GPA in all classes.

When my mom returned to this country after forgetting a lot of her English (was in Germany during the war and returned at age ~10), she was put back a year to allow her to catch up -- which she did. She earned an academic scholarship to college.

I cringe to realize that this girl will be like so many that end up in my classroom who don't really belong there Sad If she had some sort of bilingual classes to help in high school, she won't have that in college. She may be able to get a Spanish speaking tutor.

These students should not be allowed out IN to high school w/o some demonstrated proficiency in English.
