Question

Why isn't my computer recognizing my GTX 650

Jul 19, 2016 8:47AM PDT

My friend recently gave me his PC and I had to factory restore it
Upon trying to download Battle.net I was informed that there was a Graphics Context error so upon further investigation I discovered I'd have to update the drivers
So I went to the GeForce website and downloaded the driver only to find that my pc wasn't recognizing the card it's plugged in and running, I know this because the fan on top of it is running and the computer is all set up properly

He was unable to find the software disc that it came with and I am also unable to find it online somewhere
Maybe I'm just blind? I'm not sure

After you install Windows
Jul 19, 2016 9:15AM PDT

You have a lot of work to do. My routine is motherboard drivers first then audio and video.

For the Nvidia I just install the Geforce Experience app and let it go get the drivers.

Okay
Jul 19, 2016 9:20AM PDT

But that should work then?

I can't predict the result.
Jul 19, 2016 9:22AM PDT

I've used that routine for hundreds of PCs. There are folk that demand more than this.

- Collapse -
I don't demand it lol

I just want my computer to recognize the 650 so I can just play games with my friends lol
I'm not too internal computer savvy so you gotta take things real simple with me

My advice is the same
Jul 19, 2016 9:34AM PDT

Install the OS, then finish it with drivers in this order. Motherboard, audio, video and then other things.

These drivers should be on your PC's support page.

What website should I goto to update the drivers?
I have an HP Pavilion

- Collapse -
That would be HP.com

HP usually has a page specific to your model. You just have to find it.

Factory restore
Jul 19, 2016 9:35AM PDT

After a factory restore it's off to the maker's site to get all the driver updates that fit that machine.

Then it's off to the gpu maker's site to get the proper driver for the card.

Thanks
Jul 19, 2016 9:38AM PDT

Thanks for that
But will these updates change the fact that my pc doesn't recognize it as even being there?

- Collapse -
It should.
Jul 19, 2016 9:41AM PDT

Windows on a fresh install usually doesn't have the motherboard drivers so what's plugged in may not be seen until that is updated.

So I updated the motherboard drivers and it still won't recognize it

Remember these 650's are pretty old.
Jul 19, 2016 10:41AM PDT

At this point it's now suspect.

Let's start from the top (reply to your top post) with the full make and model of this PC.

Also, tell me the make+model of the PSU and how the 650 is getting it's power.

Jul 19, 2016 10:43AM PDT

is there somewhere I can go where I can just copy and paste that information?

- Collapse -
Most folk just type in it.
Jul 19, 2016 10:49AM PDT

There are folk the DUMP a load into replies with more than what we need.

Why not start with the basics?

As to it worked before, I've heard that before so we take it to the test bench to look it over.

As to the disk, I haven't used a disc in close to a decade now. The drivers are all I needed.

I texted him and he said all he had to do was pop in the disc it came with and it worked just fine... He just doesnt have the disc lying around anymore so he's not sure how to fix it

It might
Jul 19, 2016 9:43AM PDT

Just be sure to get the proper gpu driver to fit your OS.

Did you power down, then unplug this card and then plug it back in?
