Resolved Question

Why is my RAM maxing out after opening video folder???

Oct 10, 2012 2:09PM PDT

I am really confused. After I open "My Videos" folder my RAM will slowly increase until it reaches 100%. It will remain maxed out for about 20 seconds and suddenly return to normal. My computer runs idle using about 20% of my RAM. I have 6 GB which has been plenty for what I use my PC for. I have tried using the task manager (resource monitor) to find what is causing the increase in RAM usage, but there are none using that kind of RAM. How can I track what is causing this, or has anyone heard of something like this happening? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually a known issue.

Windows Explorer (that's the app you are opening that folder with) tries to build thumbnails and the "CODECS" are often buggy. This results in the issue you are seeing and sadly, I've yet to hear of Microsoft addressing this issue.

A quick workaround is to change the view to Details and to turn off thumbnail display.

Thanks Bob

That fixed the problem. I'm still confused why task manager doesn't show explorer.exe increasing in RAM usage after opening my video folder. Thanks for your help.

Short answer.

Because the memory is down a few layers in the OS or just leaking. You might spot it with a very nice GURU CLASS TOOL such as "Process Explorer."

But I found most folk don't need that. And if you research "memory leaks" you might lose all remaining hair.
