Question

Why is my pc running my hard drive at 100%?

Aug 31, 2018 12:03PM PDT

I recently moved and my pc that I built was runing just fine before I moved.
Then I noticed it wouldnt stay on for more then a few mins. I thought maybe something was loose or my power supply was bad. But those changed nothing so i sat on it for awhile and tried again recently reinstalling windows 10 (which after some fight I got it on long enough to install)
Then I noticed that the disk usage was between 90%-100% constantly I've ran virus scans error checks defrag ECT and got no change. So I swapped to another hard drive (after some fight again i got it to install windows 10) and again its having the same issue. Is there anything else i cpuld try to look over to see what may be causing this issue?

I'm finding a lot of HDD problems.
Aug 31, 2018 12:43PM PDT

These are usually found out by giving up a Web Speccy report. Read how at https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

Now scroll down to the HDD Smart values 01 an 07. If they are in the thousands you have an iffy HDD.

In the meantime, lighten the load a little but turning this next thing off. Read:
https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

Now if it takes forever to copy files around, I just posted a new video with something interesting at https://www.cnet.com/forums/post/9ce5ebb1-5a44-4d77-a7e8-abd89db371e4/

Frequently, After A Move, The Thermal Paste Needs Changing
Aug 31, 2018 4:10PM PDT

The thermal paste between the processor and heatsink will frequently crack/separate after a PC is moved and as such, the heat isn't dissipating correctly. Scrape off the old and apply a thin coat of new stuff and see if it now works as designed.

Hope this helps.

Get a Driver Update Program to Check for a New Driver
Sep 1, 2018 3:47PM PDT

One very possible answer is that you have an outdated driver for your hard drive that won't work with Windows 10. Get a good driver updating program - cnet Downloads have several good ones for a modest price, and see if there is a hard drive card driver update for your system. This is a usual fix for similar problems with drivers for hard drives, RAM cards, sound and video boards when people upgrade to a higher level OS. Good luck.

recommend not using them. Often cause more trouble than it's worth. Drivers should come from the makers site.

Nomed2111996, could very well be that the HDD is beginning to fail. Back up your info ASAP and run the HDD manufactures testing software to see what the health of the drive is.
