Why is my laptop so slow?

by hamfry / March 4, 2005 2:09 AM PST

I have a 3.2GHz P4, 2GB RAM, and a 128MB video card, but when I run a game, I need to turn its video settings almost all the way down, or else the game chugs. I don't think that adware or spyware is the problem, because my computer has run slow since the day I got it. Can someone please help me? I don't expect the computer to run flawlessly on a game like Doom 3, but I can't even turn The Sims up to its highest resolution anymore without problems.

Have a look at the running programs and their CPU usage in Task Manager. Post the results. I assume it is some background program.

If it has really been slow "since you've got it" you should contact the vendor to see what's wrong.

Hope this helps.

The CPU usage is 1-3% right now.

I contacted the vendor and even sent the laptop for repairs. They said it was working fine.

Hamfry, Have You ???

...disabled all background programs, especially your antivirus BEFORE playing the games. Unnecessary start up programs and services can really put a drain on the system. Try performing the procedures in the links below:

You haven't given us your operating system but assuming it's XP....For Windows 2000/XP, ignore the first couple of sentences about checking "resources" in the link below but follow the rest of the procedures including the "Services" links at the bottom.

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

If you're running Windows 2000 or XP, after following all the procedures above, run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag to optimize the hard drive:

Hope this helps.

Graphics card?

You haven't said what video card you are using, but is it compatible with the Sims, or Doom 3?

If you are talking about Sims 2, have a look at this troubleshooting guide at this site;

I hope this helps.
