Why is my intenet so slow?

I have a little bit older computer (8.1) with plenty of memory. I leave too many windows and programs open at a time, but I always have. My computer crashed recently and had to be re-done completely. So, everything should be pretty clean. Also on this WiFi is another computer and a laptop. We do no gaming and the only streaming we do is youtube.

This computer is slower than molasses in the winter time. According to speed tests (I've tried several) I'm getting 220 to 290 mbps depending on when I run the test. It makes no difference whether I use WiFi or ethernet, it's still slow. I can inquire of Mr. Google, and it can take a full 5 seconds to get a response. Same with checking my Yahoo mail.

Are the tests correct? If so, why does it take so long to get a response?

A few things to try.

1. USE your own choice of DNS. Many ISP DNS's log where you go and are just slow.
I use and Google "How to use your own DNS" if you need more about this.

2. I take it you don't have a big security package or suite. Some navel gaze and degrade the response time.

Try a clean browser. That is, one that you have completed step 1 and for step 2, reset that browser.

Check the Modem and Router

If possible, connect a different computer to your internet service and see if it's normal or slow. Then try the points mentioned below.
Your internet service goes from an outlet on the wall to a box called a modem. The modem is then connected to a second box called a router. You may have a box that combines both items and this is called a gateway.
Unplug the power cords from the rear of the modem and router (or gateway). Wait 20 seconds.
Plug the power cord into the modem or gateway. Wait 90 seconds (mayrequire less time but wait this long just to be sure).
Plug the power cord into the router if you have one. Wait 60 seconds.
Try the internet again.
If it's still slow, go to Wait a few seconds while it searches. Click on "GO". This will measure your internet speed at that moment.
If the result is a low speed, contact your internet service provider and ask them to send a reset signal to your modem or gateway. Wait several minutes.
During this waiting period download, install, and run the excellent free software called CCleaner. Get it from . You only need the free version. CCleaner will remove the built up of temporary internet files and other junk files which may have also built up over time. The cleaner is effective and won't harm your computer.
After the waiting period, try using the internet and/or running again.

Re: Why is my intenet so slow?

What is happening is Windows slows down the longer it's on a computer because it accumulates lots of junk. Some of that may be malware, viruses, and spyware. If you want to revive that computer and make it run faster than when it was new. Download the ISO for MX Linux and install it. Read all the directions. It's not hard. You don't need to know the command line.
