Question

Why is contrast different?

Hi. I just recently cut the cord from my cable set- top box to using Slingtv (Blue with extras) and my AppleTv 4k. In general I’m happy with the change but notice that when I am viewing programs within Slingtv’s own app, through the guide or Channels or other grid offering the picture contrast is not very sharp. In fact I am not seeing 4k or at least high even though settings are set to “best.” When I go out of the Slingtv app, to the plain channel app downloaded from the Apple App Store, the picture is much more crisp. Why does this happen and how can I improve my Slingtv’s visual performance?
I am using a Mac High Sierra 10.13.5, a Vizio E43-E2

Answer
I didn't think about this.

But I've noticed contrast differences from devices for decades. To me that explained it well enough.

As to Sling improvements, be sure to contact Sling and ask where their forums are.

Thanks but...

Been there, tried that first. And Slingtv has no forums ( fora?) only canned videos, chat or phone options. It’s why I came here, but I did finally reach a tech chat guy who appeared willing to address the issue. Seems they are aware and are trying to raise the standard up instead to leveling it out. Should take some time.

Then forums that might have sub forums on ths.

AV Forums.

I can't do much for you even if I coded for video compression systems for DVRs as I don't have the Sling and don't know what controls they exposed to the end user. My bet is there are few if any controls to improve quality and especially for Sling for many reasons.

Apple can spend time to optimize and fix badly encoded works but on the Sling they are all over the map so for capture you are going to get generational loss plus encoding loss as they have to make due with your uplink connection speed.

-> And yes, everyone is trying to push up the quality as more and more folk move to UHD 4K TVs and HDR.
