Why is AMD Quiet

Jun 10, 2005 5:14AM PDT

AMD makes excellent processors. I wonder why AMD it doesn't manufacture its own motherboards like Intel. Can someone explain please?

Why OEMS choose Intel over AMD
Jun 17, 2005 9:01AM PDT

I feel like I am repeating myself, but for the sake of clarification, I will say this here: Intel, like Microsoft uses it's size to bully OEMs. With Apple moving to Intel chips, it would be great to see OS X compete with Windows, but Apple doesn't want to do that, they just want to ''lock'' OS X to the Apple machines, with Intel offering a ''security'' feature in its new chips that would make OS X run only on Apple branded PCs.

Of course AMD chips being compatible with most hardware/software that Intel chips work with, it could be that there may be some Apple clones with AMD chips. And some ''experts'' are predicting that Apple/Intel products could probably boot up into Windows as well as Apple's proprietary (and superior) OS X.

AMD Opterons are beginning to show up in many servers and high-end workstations now. 2-way and 4-way boards are being manufactured to accommodate them. And Windows Beta 64-bit is being tested on both Amd and Intel platforms with varying degrees of success. Some are saying that AMD/WIndpws 64 is fater and more stable than the same OS on the new 64-bit Intel platform. Does that mean we'll see more AMD machines? I don't think so. Intel will pressure their OEM customers to stay the course, beliveing that Intel will devliver the best bang for the buck. Does that answer your question?

GHz
Jun 18, 2005 9:30AM PDT

I think it's because intel advertises higher GHz (2.8, 3,3.2,3.66,etc.), even though they operate around or below the level of AMD processors and they are a bigger company that is older and has proved themselves to manufactures (including Apple). This could turn out like the first macs against the PCs,or continue how it is and only be used by people who build thier own PCs.witch is a good market to aim for with thier affordable and dependable processors that also don't heat up like a P4 so they have appeal to people who build their PCs so they don't sell a lot like intel but work great none the less (like Apple).

Fabs & stuff
Jun 20, 2005 2:13PM PDT

AMD must have more than one fab. They have one in Germany(Dresden I think) and one in Texas? or California. Todays Athlon64's are not as hot in the running as Pentium 4.

I read a test on Tomshardware Guide where they tested a Pentium M on a 478 board (with a slot converter). They overclocked this to 2500Mhz and ended up with the same story as on AMD's cpu's. High clock doesn't necessary means fast CPU. The 2500Mhz Pentium M ate all AMD64 and P4 thrown at it for breakfast. And the best was. At full steam the Pentium M used around 35W. The P4 and AMD64 used around 110W+. And at idle around 60W. I think we can by that consider the P4 to be an evolution dead end. It gave even INTEL something to think on.

I do not understand why people doesnt build more their computers themself. Its so easy, its scary. If you can manage to get those wires on the right place the hardest is done. and what goes where is dea<d easy, and written in every motherboard manual I have laid my hands on. Oh, and get a good PSU, that means for gods sake not Q-Tec.

Oh for the statistics boys, of these I know of AMD outnumbers atleast INTEL 15 to 1.

And my next rig will also be AMD, just like the three others I have with amd.

This posting might be a little messy, I'm tired.. Happy

I think dell computers is a waste.
Jun 21, 2005 3:39PM PDT

Dell computers is high and got less features on them. Then theres hp there computers is cheap and more software on them. And very good services that always upgrade to a better service. Even hp can do a remote access and see whats the problem. And hp uses AMD which is the best.

agreement
Jun 22, 2005 4:47AM PDT

i agree i ran the prices of Dell parts online and for the XPS's price you could get a better Alienware or build on for around half the price!!!
i also did with HP and they ran hand-in-hand by a few $$$ with Alienware!!! the problem is Dell is for dummies and corporations, HP is aiming at multimedia consunmers that want a well rounded PC, while Alienware shoots for the gamers.

P.S. HP parts are around the same as wghat you can buy them for but the price differance comes in on thier services and exclusive software(which rocks).

P.P.S. it's the same case with alienware as HP with the exeption of the software but thier's is still good.
