Question

Why is a wifi network stalking me?

Aug 8, 2014 12:49AM PDT

This is guaranteed to sound crazy: I'm being stalked by a WiFi network named "Matilda". The network has gone everywhere I have gone and often ranges from one to two bars of reception. Any ideas everyone?

I consider myself reasonably tech savvy, so I'm shocked I can't figure out the source. I have made sure my phone and any phones near me are not broadcasting as hotspots, verified my car isn't the culprit, and have told my phone repeatedly to forget the network. Why why why?

Another note - my phone is an HTC One M8 that I just purchased, so I wouldn't think it would have any bugs from downloading stuff.

I suggest....

.....going into your phone's stored network names and clear the list. Possible that there may be an installed application adding it to your available networks. Good luck.

Answer
Let's say we enabled the phone's Hot Spot capability.

The phone would be it's own wifi network.

Where is "everywhere"? Did you try Cape Horn already?
Do other devices (like your friends laptop) pick up Matilda just as easily as your M8? If they do, turn off your M8 and see if it continues.
