WHY HASN'T BUSH RESPONDED?

May 18, 2006 12:14AM PDT

I'm just remembering that Mexican government official who told a radio interviewer that the Mexican government was going to file lawsuits against the United States if our National Guard detains any Mexicans trying to sneak into our country. Amazing, isn't it? It's like a burglary gang announcing to a neighborhood that if anyone tries to stop any gang burglars from entering their homes will face lawsuits. A statement this absurd and outrageous deserved some response. Did you hear one? I didn't. How many poll points could Bush gain if he would simply say "Hey, Vicente, mi amigo! We have borders. One side of that border is our country. The other side is yours. We don't tell you how to control your side. You don't tell us how to control ours. You are sending millions of your citizens across that border in an attempt to relieve the pressure on you to address the corruption in your own government and the failings of your economic policies. One more peep out of you and we're going to lock down the $20 billion your invasion force is sending back every year."

I don't think they make presidents like that anymore. By the way ... is there any truths to the rumor that the ACLU is ready to help Mexico with those lawsuits?

It's against the law to commit burgulary.

told a radio interviewer that the Mexican government was going to file lawsuits against the United States if our National Guard detains any Mexicans trying to sneak into our country.

It's also against the law to enter the US illegally.

Does the National Guard have the authority to detain a person entering the US illegally?

I think the answer is No.

One example is about "preventing entry" and the other is about "detaining"

If they detain anyone they are breaking the law. Unless they have the authority.

So the examples are "not the same"

Does the National Guard have the authority...

to detain a person entering the US illegally?

Actually I think they do, or can be authorized to. At any rate, that's not what they are tasked to do.

Fox's threat is pretty much hollow rhetoric IMHO. Strictly for domestic consumption in Mexico.

to detain, the proposal specifically states by Bush that they won't be detaining anybody....they will be turning them over to local USA law enforcement.
