Resolved Question

Why does windows not release my SDHC memory card?

Jul 30, 2014 1:26AM PDT

Lenovo H420 Win 7 64 bit home
When I move the photo files to my local disk, after I finish and try to release the card, I am told that the device is currently in use. Even after opening Task Manager and closing all open programs, I am told this.
What is going on?

It's an old bug.

Sorry but I've yet to find Microsoft or makers to really address this head on. What does work is for me to log out and back in.

Did you also try end tasking Explorer in the Task Manager?

And about "release". When talking about Windows, try to use the lingo. That is, in Windows we Eject a device or drive.

I agree. The default setting in Windows, since Windows XP, is to sacrifice a little performance transferring files to removable devices like memory cards and USB flash drives, so that you can just unplug them at any time after the transfer is done and be on your way. So unless you explicitly went in and changed these settings, and you'd know it if you did because they're buried deep for good reason, you're performing an unnecessary step.

I did not mean unhelpful here, but I don't know how to unclick the down thumb.
