Question

Why does my display keep going out?

Jan 14, 2013 7:37AM PST

My Samsung SyncMaster 2493hm LCD keeps going black. It happens randomly on all 3 inputs. I'm sure it's not the back light. When i turn it off and back on, it will often come back to normal for a few minutes until it goes black again. At one point, I dissembled it to see if I could find a bad cap, loose connection, any burn marks on the boards or an abundance of dust, but everything looks fine.

Does anyone know what component might be causing this issue?

Monitor etc.

One thing to try would be another monitor to see if you continue having the same result. If the same issues occur with another monitor then the issue is likely related to your on board video or slot card, whichever you use.

Sounds like one of the typical board failures.

There should be 1 or 2 boards inside. The power supply board is too easy to check out with a Volt Meter. The other board is rarely repairable. But look for any heat sinks and then do the usual tech work of replacing the heat sink compound.

When you check the small pcbs on the LCD, just resolder(reheat) the areas that are exposed. Unless, you have a O-scope or fancy gear to check sub-components then consider its too much to check. It sure appears like a power issue with the backlight or converter. Next time it happens, with a flashlight shown across the screen, do you see a faint display? If there are flex cables, be sure no breaks/cracks are present and fully seated. Also, a few smart smacks on the backside may reveal a possible issue, worth a try. Any warranty? use it.
