Why do Vista / Seven handle files so much slower than XP

Dec 13, 2009 11:27AM PST

I'm still running my business on XP.

I bought an unfortunate Vista machine
which I just had stripped out and
reborne in Windows 7....much better

but.

If I try to copy a Simpletech 250GB
backup USB to a 1.3TB USB "vault unit,"
Windows 7 (and Vista before it) estimated
and took more than 5 hours to transfer
less than 20GB, while XP does it in
about 15 minutes.

This is HS USB-2 port to port, using a PC
as a transfer connector. Both NTFS,
all the files are MS compatible.

No, it's not the antivirus.

Is this designed in or are the default setups
for a web appliance only? How can they be changed?

It must be "something" different from here to there. If this was true for everyone, this would be the end for MSFT. What's different from stock is the first things I look at. Next I look at the old front USB ports and who installed the OS. Many times we see the person who did the install not install motherboard drivers or check for update BIOS and more.

-> Let's be clear here. MSFT is not providing an OS you can avoid the work. It is not up to MSFT to find all this for us.

Sorry for the slow response, will check all USB port updates
ASAP but I'm not where the offending machine is located
until this evening.

And how did you check that?

Let's recall the Driver Update has never worked proper. Your reply did not reveal exactly how you did this. Again, MSFT is not supplying an OS that installs then finds all the drivers for us.

Those that forget this will have problems. Those that rely on Driver Update alone will also learn the lesson again.
