why did my Snapchat's memories disappear?

by tomelks / July 22, 2016 8:41 AM PDT

Hello everyone,
I came back from a vacation today. Through the vacation, I saved all of my snaps from the to the memories. Yesterday I plugged the phone to the computer wanting to download the memories onto it, only to find that the memories are missing (the last day seems to be there but all of the last week is missing). I get the message of "Backup error" but i cannot backup the snaps from the vaction for some reason - I can see 21 snaps but every time I click on the "Try again" it doesn't do anything..... I am very frustrated because these snaps mean a great deal to me.

Anyone might have an insight of why it happened? and how can I get my pictures? Logic says they have to be saved somewhere on the device before they are backed up to snapchat's Memories.....

Thanks in advance,

Here's what the app does in 24 hours.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / December 10, 2016 10:49 AM PST

"Snapchat Stories, in which people can string together photos and video clips that disappear after 24 hours."

Seems clear to me that if you want something longer, you use some other app.

You don't even know what Snapchat is
by Ethantheb / September 30, 2017 5:11 AM PDT

Seems clear to me that you didn't bother reading the question. Nor have you even touched Snapchat in over two years. Memories is not the same as stories, memories stores pictures/videos long term. It should not be deleting things

So what Snapchat is today is not what we were discussing. Also, folk are upset that these apps may forget content if you uninstall the app.

-> If you can contribute to a solution please do so.

And learn to not use apps that you can't backup and are known to lose stuff.

It shouldn't be happening

In reply to: Read this thread.

What are you talking about? He isn't posting stories he is saving to memories. Snapchat advertises this feature as a long term save feaure, thus it shouldn't be deleting these.

As noted I'll close this thread as today's version is not the same.

Apps do have bugs. Data, pictures and such are ours to safeguard, and this can really upset folk that rely on apps that forget stuff, are buggy or delete content on uninstall.

I'm hearing, reading a lot of screams over this.

Moderators repeat it over and over about backup of what you can't lose yet folk keep losing stuff.

Remember, it's not up to anyone but you to keep your stuff safe.

Was that your Snapchat must be the latest version (as of 10? days ago) or that might happen.

I had the same problem. When I updated the app, the memories came back. It warned me when I clicked "log off" that my memories would be deleted if I logged out, and it sounds like that's what happened to another user, so I'm surprised it seemed to have worked for so many people.

I tried logging out & in, and what happened is that now I can't see any of the snaps that "couldn't be backed up" (the snaps from my vacation...).
Any idea if they might be somewhere on my device?

Hi I'm in the same boat. Went on vacation. Took a bunch of photos in Alaska, went to a concert and when I came home, cracked my phone. I backed up multiple times to both iCloud and my Mac laptop before getting replacement. When I restored my back up my photos in snapchat memories were missing. Tons of lost data and I've also tried looking into data recovery with no luck. I emailed snapchat twice, no replies. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the solution!
by JulieBergNO / September 6, 2016 1:38 AM PDT

Hey guys! Up until five minutes ago I had the exact same problem as you, but I found the solution! My snapchat is in Norwegian, but if you go to settings and scroll down, you'll find an option which is probably called something like "empty cache". It will delete any unnecessary files, but won't delete your memories. I did this, and straight afterwards all my photos and videos popped back up again! Hope this works for you guys as well Happy

Hey Julie! So I cracked my phone and I had my memories on my snapchat and they were still there. However, one day I logged on and they were all cleared. So I went to the settings and when to the empty cache option. Then two options appeared one of which was "Clear Memory Caches" so would I clear the memories Cache? Because the message appeared that it will free up space, but memories not backed up will be deleted. And I did not have the chance to backup my memories yet? So what would you recommend doing? Please help! Because I would love to have all my pictures back!! Thanks

Clear cache
by Senga_xo / September 13, 2016 6:56 PM PDT
In reply to: Question.

Yes!!! I just cleared my cache and I can see all of memories I was really scared to try it but I figured what the heck. Just clear the cache and go back on your memories and the picturea will be there. Go to setting after and change where you save the picture to. Change it to memories and camera roll just in case

by justiiiiiii / September 19, 2016 11:15 PM PDT

hey, I had the same issue. I've been trying for about 2 months trying to get all my memories back until recently, today, I had figured out a way that worked for me. First, go to settings on snap, *click clear cache*..then click Clear Memories cache..Log out and then log back in..Clearing your memories cache will not delete your memories. With me, while i was still logged in after cleaning the cache, everything was gone!. I was upset and gave up for a moment until i thought about logging out and think what the heck? they are gone anyway, so why not log out and log in to see what happens. I was having issues logging back in but managed to get in after few attempts. When i went to my memories, wallah, they are all back!!. Also, i have the S7 Edge, if that matters. Good luck!

I gave it a go and did what you suggested, however it didst quite work for me. I am really upset now because i had lots of pictures and loads of my nieces and my home county that i wont get to visit for another couple of years. But it is completely gone and i don't say backing up, i wish i would go back and save it to my gallery instead by i when on holiday right after i updated snapchat so i didn't know you could change it in settings. But thanks for trying to help. Happy / Sad

But, if it happens again you can hold down the image in the backup error and save to camera roll

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
