Why did an app change

Jul 2, 2009 3:36PM PDT

How can I identify how a long-used app has suddenly changed, in a slight way w/o my wanting/causing any change to it? Like say, some malware caused a file to corrupt or empty, the file got corrupt another way, or some setting change I made to something else messed up this app? (I think these are ways it can happen, have no idea how many more exist)

Is it usually related to virus infection, i.e., an indicator of infection?

There are a gazillion apps . . .

and the word change is relative. Care to share the app and exactly what happened? Maybe the app did an update and it now looks a little different.

Ok Coryphaeus, 2 examples;

1) Corel Paint Shop Pro 10 and the related Corel Photo Album 6, no recent updates done or available --
In both, when a photo is opened, when looking at the image info, the Color Space info is now incorrect, it will say either 'uncalibrated' or 'sRGB' when I know the image was shot in AdobeRGB1998 colorspace. Both used to show the correct space, as shot.
I verified my DSLR was still set to RGB, and the images do show correct colorspace when opened in a Nikon app, ViewNX.

2) Windows Media Player 10 -- My PC had WMP10 orig, I upgraded to 11 at some point, later the 'Print CD Label' function disappeared. It wasn't just 'grayed-out' in the 'File' list, it was gone. And I didn't like how WMP11 behaved, uninstalled 11, reinstalled 10. 10 has worked fine ever since, and don't have the 'Print CD Label' in 10 either, but don't remember if I had that in my PC's original WMP10, but I think so.

Someone said the label printing part of WMP was in something called 'Windows Plus' and I could maybe reinstall just that part from a Windows XP install CD. Afraid to put the disk in my drive to try only that, don't want to mess up XP, it is fine. I see a file with that name(W+) containing 3 or 4 folders but they're all empty except for one.

I just wonder if a malware likely caused these to happen(No hits when scanned), or what else may be cause.

Thanks

Does WMP 10 do that?

Yes, it may be considered

an add-on that I've found MS once sold for $20. I've seen it called 'Microsoft Plus' and 'Windows Plus' and it came standard on some versions of Windows XP. As prev said, I have that file, 'W Plus' but the folder marked 'CD Labelmaker' and 2 others of 4 total are empty.

Since my PC was originally configured with that capability included in my version of XP, is it possible to use one of the mfr's CDs to reinstall that Windows Plus only?

I'm going to answer NO.

Almost every restore cd I've encountered does not have such a pick and choose feature. Dell being an exception.

Also your post omitted key details so no one can see exactly what software title is in play. Only that it's not a native part of WMP.

So dive into your Dell CDs and slip them in and see if they offer a reinstall of what you want?
