Question

Why cant redirection of my browser be prevented?

Nov 12, 2014 12:47AM PST

My problem is unwanted redirection of my home page when opening Internet Explorer 10. My PC is an 9 month old HP All in One Smartouch Envy20 64 bit win 8,0 OS with 4 gig mem and 1 tb HD. HP ENVY 20-d113w TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop PC.
I appreciate all proffered solutions. But first I must say that I KNow nothing much about computing. I just go blindly about enjoying it, until......
Well my machine MIGHT have the worst problem ever. It could self destruct, blowing me, my wife, my home to heck and back.
Then suddenly I luck upon a "FIX" where all I have to do, is download something like "FIX "death and Destruction".exe and all will be well. HMMM Ok I can do that. Don't even take too much out of a PC Dummy.I download it, run it, reboot and HOOORAY! all stuff is OK and ready to live a long life.
But I DO have a virus or some thing I cant understand, it is not a really BAD thing. But is driving me bonkers. Just irritating the mortal daylights out of me. Some "force unknown", wants to redirect my home page to some site where it thinks it can make money from me! Yeah RIght. ME? Money? But it is so aggravating...knowing genius can do that to MY Property..
I have tried most if not all suggestions and granted I do have problems understanding all of it. But I still have problem!!! I may try again, but now I still get sent "over there"
My point is why does the problem still exist. I cant -I don't know enough PCing to stop whatever it is.
BUT surely there is someone at Microsoft (huh), Google, or hundreds of other 'program manufacturing' brains, who could write a fix in minutes.
But when asking the question about what can I do to stop redirecting, all I get by far from MOST replies, amounts to DUUUUH I DON Know.
Does anyone else agree with about how exasperating this stuff can be??? Can anybody out write a "FIX" program?
Or do I have to spend the rest of my computering life dreading to open my browser because I known some idiot genius is going to send me to "Sites Unknown"
Thanks

Your prior posts are interesting too.

But in this case I'd reset IE and try it again.

I'll also share I consider IE to be like walking around with a stack of hundred dollar bills in your hands. IE is the prime target for exploits and more. Why do that? Why not use almost any other browser?

did! didn't help, thanks

Microsoft just issued a fix for most but not all IE's
Nov 13, 2014 10:57PM PST

It's in the news but your prior posts tell a story. It's rather a long story but if it can't be fixed by anyone then it may be time to backup your stuff and reset the entire PC to factory conditions. If that fails, there is a hardware issue.

Done done that tooo

when all else fails - but that didnt work either

Re|: reset to factory conditions

That makes your PC as it was when you bought it. If something is still wrong, any new PC would do the same, so it's not a problem in your PC.

Did you try a laptop from a friend with your modem/router? If that works OK, your reset to factory conditions was in error. If that doesn't work OK either, it's your modem/router/ISP.

And you have run a malwarebytes scan in Safe Mode With Networking? That is a pretty simple thing to do and often times will allow you to removes bugs creating issues such as re directs. IF you have not, I'd recommend giving it a shot. Naturally you'd have to have MWB downloaded in the system or run MWB from a FD.

Done it? Yep

Fixed? Nope

And what if anything appeared after the scan(s), with MWB, in Safe Mode with Networking? again, not just SAFE mode...with Networking, there IS a difference.

system restore to restore point
Nov 12, 2014 6:11AM PST

try a system restore to a restore point just prior to when the problem started. If unable to, you should do the following, go to your browser add ons or extension and see if there any unknown ones. If so, uninstall them. Go to you your programs and files in the control panel see if there are any strange programs installed. You should download the following two utilities and run them. Malwarebytes and hitman pro.

http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ (free trial)
https://www.malwarebytes.org/

do NOT download from cnet since their downloads have wrappers that will install the same type of trash.

In the end, you may need to go to a forum that has a malware section where the helpers there will have you run some logs that they can check for you.

trying to find out how to stop this redirection, I was thoroughly convinced It was Microsoft behind it.

If not, why dont they provide a "FIX" for my type problem, instead of just ignoring it with "i do knows".

Just go with
Nov 14, 2014 2:07AM PST

Firefox or Chromium or Opera. I quit using IE back after version 4 was outdated, and even then was using Netscape most times anyway. Also, why Pirate Microsoft when there's so much better software available from a wide selection of Linux distros? That's like stealing burgers from McDonald's while next door is serving free steak dinners.

Other browsers
Nov 16, 2014 8:34PM PST

Well just this morning, chrome began again having the same problem. So its not just IE. And still no one has "fixed" after 19 years

- Collapse -
they do have fixes
Nov 14, 2014 4:25AM PST

all the fixes in the world cannot stop the weakest link from installing, downloading and clicking on unreliable sources. when the weakest link does all of that, they are allowing the malware to bypass the computers security.

As far as the suggestion about linux distros. only reason why linux is safer is because there are not enough users to make it worth the time of those who write and distribute malware. It is out there but fortunately it is few and far between. I use Linux Mint on all of my computers.

Answer
use the hosts file
Nov 17, 2014 7:51AM PST

add the sites it sends you to in a redirect and your browser won't go there.

Also, whatever site it tries to send you to, run a Search on the entire drive for all folders and files with text string of that site's name. That latter may help you find where the redirect is hiding.

Dont really understand solution
Dec 6, 2014 12:10AM PST

But tried with no results. Then suddenly. problem cleared up by chance or luck or I dont know.

Then it came back. I have since uninstalled all various anti VIRUS PROGRAMS AND anti malware.

Restarted windows Defender and installed malwarebytes antimalware and AdBlocker. PC is running much better and i will figure out this redirect crap.

NOw just another example of Microsoft's sneaky crap. For several mopnths now, I have been getting a reminder for a free upgrade to WIN 8.1. Since I had already tried it, didnt like it. and didnt want it, and had to I kept rejecting it. NO NO NO every time NO NO.
But very early one AM very early in the AM. AM, I left the message up on the screen after choosing no did not want 8.1 free upgrade. Lo and be heck the next afternoon when I when turned on PC, upgrade to win 8.1 was just completing, having been run without my permission. I know that cant possibly happen BUT IT DID, now I gotta recover again. Crap

WINE
Dec 6, 2014 11:43PM PST

and Virtual Box can be a friend in the transition. I still use my favorite windows based graphics program (Lviewpro D1) in WINE program. Also have notepad in it. Also have the "comet busters" game, which is based on the old Asteroids arcade game, running in WINE. The old windows based games run well in it. There's a list at the WINE site which details those which work and don't.

command line;

wine /home/mint16/.wine/drive_c/COMET/comet.exe
