Question

Why can't i use my Tv to screen mirror?

Dec 20, 2014 12:05PM PST

So i have an LG smart and a new computer, i want to use said tv as an extra screen for gaming and whatnot, so far as i can tell from other forums i "should" be able to just plug in a Hdmi cable, from my hdmi out in the tower, to the hdmi in on the tv, and bing bang boom, screen mirror.
this is not the case, for some reason my computer detects the tv, but only as a "digital media renderer" instead of the indended display or monitor.

Why is this? is it the tv, the computer or perhaps even the hdmi cable?

running windows 7 64 bit
intel i3 - 4160 @ 3.6 Ghz
Geforce GTX 760

In short, no, Never that simple.

Windows setup for mirroring isn't that simple. There are tomes about setup so I'd like to hear more about why a mirror over a second display.

why mirror rather than second display? well i have my essentially a joined living room/ office, so at times i use my usual monitor for day to day stuff which leaves the tv open, and others id like to be able to use the tv for movies/games and such.
iv been able to use the dnla feature to stream movies to the tv which has been suiting me just fine, but im wanting to play some of my game on it as well

step one issues

my computer doesnt detect a new display when i hook up the tv, it detects a digital media renderer. if it detected a display i could probably figure it out,
i need to figure out how to tell my computer its a monitor, or tell my tv to communicate that to the tower

Sounds like the HDMI is not working at all.

"digital media renderer." is usually for DLNA or network displays. I'm sure you've read that that would not be appropriate for mirroring. Sounds like HDMI is not connected, drivers not ready or OTHER.

I would be guessing why this new PC isn't ready so talk to it's maker to correct the flaw.
