If you back up to a CD, your data will still be there in case of a disaster.
If you have a problem and need to REFORMAT (wipe out everything and start from scratch), you should be able to recover the data (that is, all you years of work inlcuding all you e-mails, contacts, favorites, musing and photos!).
If you back up and save the file on your computer, it WILL disappear if and when you reformat!

I just found "Backup" on my Windows 98, so I ran it to backup everything, about 2 gig. But I don't quite understand the purpose of a backup. If my computer crashes, will I still be able to get to the backup? Should I just backup certain files and then put them on a disk? Please don't get too technical, and thanks. By the way, I checked the search forum and couldn't find the answers.
