General discussion

Why are you people not answering my query?

Mar 10, 2010 2:18AM PST

I have purcased dell 1545 inspiron Laptop on 24/10/2009.It came with preinstalled Windows 7.

But I did not get the genuine Windows 7 CD.On asking it from the retailer shop(Vijay Sales,Mumbai) from where I bought the Laptop ,the retailer is not ready to accept that he has not given me the CD's.

Then I contacted the Dell people. There my call keeps on transferring from one end to other like a pendulum.ie from sales dept to Technical one.And each and every time I have to give them my service tag number of my laptop and explain them the whole story.

I have contacted Dell people earlier also in February. But no result.I have wasted my momentus time in such mediocre activities.

It's very frustrating and pathetic.
Tell me what should I do?

IS there anyone to listen to me?

Typically you don't get them with laptops anymore
Mar 10, 2010 2:23AM PST

They come with utilities to make your own from within the installation and burn recovery CDs yourself. In some cases a manufacturer will sell these to you but you need to ask. It's been a few years since CDs were provided with consumer type laptops.

But that will not get you any CDs. Today, almost all have you make your own restore media or you order them for a price.

On top of that, you will not get a genuine RETAIL Windows 7 DVD (it does not come on CD) because you have an OEM version that doesn't have any equivalent to the Retail DVD that you might be looking for.

Unless you are willing to pay for the full license you should never see this DVD.

Hope that helps,
Bob

Actually
Mar 10, 2010 7:44AM PST

Actually, Dell is one of the few OEMs that still ships a Windows install disc by default. When I bought a Dell system from Best Buy I don't believe it came with one, but I just had to submit a request form on the Dell website and a set was shipped out to me free of charge.

In this case, it kind of sounds like a shady retailer.

I listened, too :)

Like others said, you will not get a CD when you purchase an OEM version. To put your mind at ease, you can create a system repair which allows you to access system recovery options. To create a repair disc, Open Backup and Restore, click Create a system repair disc, and then follow the steps. You may be prompted for an administrator password in the process, so be prepared to do so.

Cassandra

Discombobulated!
Mar 11, 2010 1:12PM PST

It's very confusing.Someone is saying yes and some no.People have different opinions.

But why should I not get the Disc if the retailer is ready to accept that they provide discs with Laptops.

Also dell people said that I should get the discs from the retailer.

But the retailer is not ready to accept that he has not given me the discs.

By this statement

"But the retailer is not ready to accept that he has not given me the discs."

are you saying that the dealer's response is that they've already given you the disks?

Yes according to him he has given me discs. He is not ready to accept his fault.

There it is.

If these came with the machine, but didn't make it to you, you may be right to expect discs.

As soon as you are willing to pay for replacement media I think you may have a chance to get the media.

However I find some that will keep trying anything to avoid that.

Clarification?
Mar 12, 2010 2:37AM PST

I am unclear why you need the disk. If this is an OEM version, you will not be able to install Windows 7 on another computer. If you want the disk in order to be able to do a system repair, then the process I previously posted is the information that you need.

Because dell people told me to be ready with

the disc otherwise they couldn't help me in reinstalling Windows 7 on my Laptop.

Seems...
Mar 12, 2010 2:06AM PST

Normal practice to me. They keep you around so you will give up. I seen this trend with a lot of companies, they will sell you quick but takes forever to support.

Another option is to get Linux and ditched MS after you paid for the MS License.

That brings another question... Why can not you buy a PC or a Laptop without the OS, even if you have a Legit Copy or Enterprise Lic? Weird...

- Collapse -
Post that new question on its own.
Mar 12, 2010 2:16AM PST

The reason is pretty simple. Most demand to see the machine running with every function. So an OS must be installed. If you don't want what it comes with, just start over. And about the OS cost. It's not much and not worth the trouble of getting a refund on it.

I am sying that...

One time when I used to work as a Network Tech we purchased over $2,500 for our 6 state region. We have an Enterprise Lic, we have Images to load that had our very own proprietary software. We had a crapola of trouble trying to get the systems without the OS. Some people did not liked it at all. We got the systems, with a good fight.

The bottom line, if I want my computer without the OS because I want to install my own (on this case is OS irrelevant), I should be able to do so.

The only way you can circumvent the system is by purchasing a Barebones System that you assemble yourself.

Sorry but that's untrue. But rather than highjack someone's discussion post a new thread and we'll hash this out yet again.

I don't understand what are you talking about
Mar 14, 2010 12:36AM PST

Which "fund" are you talking about?

Sorry,I could not get it.

Please elaborate in a simple manner.

Fund as in funds.

Those that DEMAND a real Windows 7 DVD are now learning such is rarely supplied with the machine. You get to PAY for such nice items.

Have you put it in writing?
Mar 12, 2010 11:27AM PST

The only suggestion I can make is to put it in writing (if you haven't already). A letter can result in a proper response when phone calls are being disregarded.

Do you have any government departments that handle consumer concerns? Here we have a "consumer affairs" department that will mediate consumer disputes like this, where there is a dispute that you didn't get what you paid for (ie a computer with installation media).

Kind of yes and no...

"Do you have any government departments that handle consumer concerns? Here we have a "consumer affairs" department that will mediate consumer disputes like this, where there is a dispute that you didn't get what you paid for (ie a computer with installation media)."

In the USA there are some Government agencies in place for that kind of things, but, as any Government agency is bureaucratic as hell. So is slow and tedious process. Is all about money, how much is worth and how much you are willing to spend to obtain it. So as a business practice, most companies gives what the costumer wants, not because the Government tells them, is more of giving costumer satisfaction so you will come back or recommend others.

PS. I do apologize to go on a tangent, no intention to hijack the thread.

Genuine Windows 7 CD along with Dell
Mar 26, 2010 12:21PM PDT

Hi,

First of all u check the laptop kit's catalogue whether they have mentioned about the Windows 7 CD with that pack. If they have mentioned it in the kit, then you can surely get it from the retailer.

(eg: anywhere in the catalague or in the box, they will mention as "Pack includes: Dell Laptop, adoptor .... etc"
