Why are so many Jews liberal?

Ooh! Ooh! But will he ...
Apr 25, 2006 5:02AM PDT

Nah. Probably not.

Serious note: Some years ago I talked with a German "war orphan"; parents killed in an Allied bombing raid. I was sympathizing with her, pointing out the bible's promise of no more war, when she volunteered the information that 'Hitler didn't know about the Holocaust, his people lied to him; and anyway, the Jews had it coming.'

They're still out there, in spite of evolution's best efforts. Sad

We have three friends with parents who lived through the

nightmare that was Germany in the war years. Grace's father survived Stalingrad and the Russian POW camps which makes him part of the lucky 1/3 who survived (although I've heard that the of the survivors of Stalingrad its more like 1/10th) and still believes the whole thing. Grace is embarassed but quiet about it. Her best friend is Jewish.

Dagmar's are a lovely tiny couple about 5'1 and 5'4 respectively. He was young and was in an apprenticeship program when the War broke out, ultimately he was part of the Eisenbahntruppe, the guys that fixed the railway trains, tracks, and engines. He, too, was captured but was kept alive because he was useful in keeping the trains running. She is a lovely woman, but she wanted me to sympathize with the fact that her part of East Prussia was taken over by the Soviet Union. I ducked the question, but No I don't think it a terrible thing, I think the Germans who followed Hitler so willingly got what they deserved, except for the rape part on the part of the Russians. Dagmar still doesn't know if that happened to her mother, and won't ask. She doesn't want to bring back any bad memories. Dagmar, born post war in Germany but raised in Montreal Canada, was really irritated by the 50th Anniversary Celebrations over the defeat of Germany.

I haven't probed Katy's situation yet.

Some of this I think is just flat out wrong
Apr 25, 2006 6:20AM PDT

"Despite their secularism, Jews may be the most religious ethnic group in the world. The problem is that their religion is rarely Judaism; rather it is every "ism" of the Left." This is entirely unsubstantiated opinion and verges on Anti-Semitism in my opinion.

My opinion on the other hand is that the very nature of the Jewish religious tradition makes them liberal, examiners of the world as it is and desirous of making it better not just for themselves. The debates over righteous actions relating to the Talmud and much of the scholarship connected to it inclines Jews to a critical and inquiring view of the world. They do not accept things as they appear, but question the assumptions.

The fact that Jews have been a persecuted minority wherever they have resided also contributes to a world view that does not accept what is, but wishes to change it.

Precisely because of the their history
Apr 25, 2006 6:31AM PDT

Jews have grown suspicious of many things over time, yet they seem to ignore the leftist/liberal anti-semitism which today is a bigger danger than neo-Nazi anti-semitism.
All you have to do is look at all the demostrations carried out by anti-war loonies. There are more plackards denouncing Israel and Jews than the war (OK, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the gist).

Same mistakes
Apr 26, 2006 8:25AM PDT

I think they are making the same mistakes here they made in Germany, the type of actions that made it easier for Hitler to target them. In those days it was the Bohemian movement and socialist movement, but not much different than what's been developing here the past few decades. All Hitler had to do was target their support of immoral activists and their socialist leanings. To that he pointed at high profile Jews with money during a time of depression for his country. He nationalized their feelings because of German being ostracized by the other countries in the world. Can it happen here? I don't know, but some of the same elements are in place.

talmud
Apr 26, 2006 8:19AM PDT

have you ever read the talmud? Some of the latter day translations leave out the more interesting parts. Look at the way Gentiles were regarded in the NT, and women too, and you pretty much have the talmud, in a better view.

Maybe I should have said: "hurtful statements" rather than "hateful". My mistake.
