Question

why are both AVG and AVAST giving the same virus warning??

Was using Avast! for years; a couple weeks ago began getting a warning about the program capturing and putting into virus chest the same virus over and over. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same issue. After days of doing this, uninstalled and then went to AVG. Same exact issue, same exact warning and always one right after the other (in both programs), same verbiage. How can I kill whatever is causing this annoying issue? Happens whenever I open Firefox?

Re: AVG and AVAST

Those 2 programs are made by the same company (since Avast bought AVG), and that might answer your first question.

Can you tell 4 things:
1. What virus is it?
2. Does it happen if you open Firefox or if Firefox opens its home page (easy to check by setting the home page to about:blank)
3. Does it happen also if you open another browser?
4. Does it still happen if you reset Firefox to defaults (google that if necessary)?

Clues in reply to your Qs

1: Came w/incoming email (Thunderbird) last four in virus vault: all 4 are listed: Other:Malware-gen [Trj]
2: I don't have an example of when it happens as I open a Firefox (Bing) page. It doesn't happen just when I open Firefox.
3: It doesn't happen when I open a different browser.
4. will answer #4 in separate note.

Hi, nonib17:

In addition to the information Kees_B asked for, we'll also need to know:
- The exact verbiage of the warning you're receiving.
- Which firmware version of our software is currently installed on your system.
- Which firmware version of Firefox you're using.
- If you have any tabs currently open in the browser, which sites are they for (may be site related).

Resolved; no more annoying duplicated warning on same virus

Since multiple program updates, this problem disappeared. I have no idea if it was due to Win 10, Thunderbird, or something else, as I had already un- and reinstalled Avast, then installed AVG and got the same warnings but only a couple of days and 'poof' gone. Thanks all for your suggestions.
