Android vs iPhone is a much debated topic among technology enthusiasts and ordinary people. It might seem like a simple choice but I'm here to convince you that in 2018, Android is simply the better answer.
I'll be dividing this article into three main sections, Hardware, Software and Counterarguments.
Hardware
- Choice
+ There are hundreds of models released each year by many manufacturers, each boasting different innovative features. It might seem overwhelming but by using "phone finder" from GSMArena you can easily narrow down your choice based on features and aesthetic.
- Features
+ Android phone manufacturers are constantly researching cutting edge technology and coming up with new features before Apple.
+ Android phones often have simple things the iPhones don't, like SD card slots, dual SIM, wireless charging, dual cameras and, of course, a headphone jack. Not to mention they have more powerful hardware like better processors, graphics and more RAM.
- Budget
+ It's well known that Android smartphones are more affordable than iPhones, because you're not paying that ridiculous "Apple tax".
- Repair
+ Apple products are notoriously hard and expensive to service, mainly because Apple doesn't sell replacement parts. Apple is highly against third party repair and it even known for sueing repair stores. Unlike Apple, Samsung sells replacement parts in a web store.
Software
- Customization
+ Launchers
+ Icon packs
- Apps
+ On Android you can choose default apps for specific actions. For example, you can choose chrome as your browser and VLC as your music player.
+ There are more apps made for Android and on the Play Store. Mainly because the Play Store is less restrictive than the App Store. For example Apple bans emulators from the App Store
+ There are more useful and tool-like apps for Android. For example, you can download IP-camera to use an old phone as a security cam.
+ There are more free, ad free and open source apps for Android meaning it ends up cheaper and less intrusive.
+ There are also alternative app markets for Android like F-Droid and APKPure.
-Files
+ Android has easy USB transfer for all files and folders, not just pictures and video.
+ Android gives you full filesystem access so you can see the files of apps (eg. savegames) and much more.
- Rooting (advanced)
+ You can install a custom ROM (operation system).
+ You can change the boot animation.
+ You can change system behavior.
Counterarguments
- Android is insecure
+ With recent advances in security this really isn't the case anymore. There is play protect to verify apps' security and warn you of harmful apps. Manufacturers often have their own security measures on their devices too. And a good bit of common sense on the internet of course comes long way. If you don't download apps from a shady websites, there's really nothing that can happen.
- iPhones look better
+ This is a really subjective argument and it's often used by people who like to show how wealthy they are using their phone. The easy answer is to just pick a phone that looks good. There are hundreds of phones released each year and there are plenty that look great and have good features.
