Who will buy the iPhone?

Apr 25, 2007 11:07PM PDT

I'm interested in knowing which BOLers are planning on buying the iPhone. I want one bad, but

a) Can't afford the price tag.
b) Just renewed my plan with Cingular.
c) Its a Rev1-- completely new-- Apple device...

who will buy it?

teenagers with rich parents. or rather, rich parents who feel like they can compensate for not spending time with there kids by buying them expensive gadgets.

I am the type of consumer who would buy it

But I'm also the type of high end consumer who expects a lot more than 8GB.

I completely love the phone, I think it makes every other cell phone look like junk. It was the phone I imagined about well before it was announced, it's an obvious idea but took apple to do it.
I'd find the google maps and full internet features incredibly useful though, so often I wish I could quickly google something or search for a street address while out during the day, but still I don't need that enough to spend a lot on such a feature, it's an insanely cool but I could live without it feature.
But I'm not a guy who's really big on phones to begin with, I just want to make a call, I don't care about 3G or other gimmicks that make you pay through the nose for a little bit of content over a mobile connection, I have an iPod. I really care about media and music. The iPhone is a phone that offers a lot to someone to whom phoning and communication are secondary mundane necessities really.
And with only 8GB of capacity, it's a laughable replacement for a 5 gen ipod. Could barely fit a few of my favourite artists complete works, forget my complete music collection and movies and tv shows.

Not I

1. I'm on Verizon. My contract doesn't end until next March, but I won't be switching then. I like my plan and I get a very good discount through my employer.

2. I don't want a smartphone. I don't want to have my entire digital life wrapped up in one device. Plus, I'm too cheap to pony up for a data plan, even with a discount.

3. I would only reconsider if:
Verizon gets the phone by the time my contract ends, which is
highly unlikely. AND
The price of the iPhone went down to say, $250 for the 8GB. AND
A data plan would tack on only $5 more per month (I'm only paying
$30 now) and I could get rid of it at any time.

4. Maybe I would reconsider if my employer got one for me. That's not likely to happen....they only gave me a pager and I'm using my personal laptop for work.

I'd much rather have a new iPod. Not that I really need one.

Wait a few months

I'm a big fan of Apple and I'm very excited about the release of the iPhone, but Price and 2yr contracts are forcing me to wait. I'm sure that we'll see the price and 2yr contracts dropped by Christmas time. I'll predict $399.00 for the 8gb by Christmas.

Not me...

I know that I personally won't be.

It's expensive, for one. Also, my T-Mobile contract was just renewed two or three weeks ago, so there's *another* year where I won't be switching to AT&T. Not that I've had bad experience with T-Mobile, they've got fairly decent coverage around Philadelphia, but it's naturally a hassle to switch Silly

If Apple decided to let other providers (such as T-Mobile) use & sell the iPhone, that may raise a different situation.

But I know for sure I won't be buying it any time soon, as much as I kinda want it Plain

Non techies apparently

So, upon asking acouple not-geeks, my dad is thinking about it, my brother is planning on it, and my music teacher is certain of buying the phone. So apparently this is going to be a market success. Surprise, surprise.

It's really the 6 gen ipod to a lot of people, with more phone as bonus. That's one of the reasons it'll be a success.

Would be a great toy, but...
Jun 11, 2007 6:25AM PDT

... wouldn't work for me in the end. The phone doesn't seem to have enough runtime for the music-ing and the talking that I do. Also, I make extensive use of 3G/GPRS so although I could get by with the slower speed, it's something I'd rather not do.

I've also grown beyond iPod in my musical devices, so yet another iPod doesn't hold that much appeal for me anymore.

The email / contact /calendar features are not there in comparison to what I get through my current Windows Mobile devices in terms of push compatibility, and there's generally a whole host of other stuff that the iPhone is lacking for what I actually do these days.

Gotta love that Coverflow view though...

Run time?

You need more than 5 hours of both video and talking in a day? Wink

Get real.

Real-life battery life that is. What most manufacturers quote has very little to do with the usage of a typically 'connected' person throughout the say. Apples projections are chronically short for a device which is designed to do everything. As Patrick Norton (dl.tv guy) said with some foresight, the hottest accessory for the iPhone might be a piggyback battery pack... or at least extra USB charging cords.

I really really want one, but it won't be compatible
Jun 17, 2007 1:09PM PDT

With my companies software. We have to use Blackberries if we want them to let us sync our office calendar and e-mail. I can't see carrying the Blackberry and this too. That would be a lot of bulk. Now if I could talk IT into letting this be optional... I'm there in a heartbeat.
