Resolved Question

who owns my cell phone number

Apr 16, 2014 4:15AM PDT

Who owns my cell phone number? Do I have to own a cell phone in order to have a number?

Suppose I want to cancel my current contract and be without service for a short time until a new phone and contract is acquired. Can I keep my current number in that situation.

My provider, AT&T, can not or will not give me a straight answer.

Possible solution for next time

Sorry you lost your old number. Next time if you are inbetween carriers, I would look into something like Google Voice. Some folks have found porting to GV for a one time $20 fee is one useful method until you can sort out your next carrier/handset/etc. See here:

Otherwise, to elaborate on what Bob said (and also spot on, btw), normally you sign up for the second carrier while you are still on the previous carrier. The new carrier provides you with a temporary number, which you test out for the first 30 days (etc.). Once it works to your needs, then you port over (=transfer) the old number to the new service. Any cancellation otherwise means you relinquish your old number.

Answer
If you cancel you may have given up that number.

If you transferred it that could save this number. So in a word, no, you don't own the number. Some folk can't grasp this on how we must tread carefully and not cancel if we want that number.

Again, transfer, don't cancel as you may lose the number.
