Oversimplified, I'd say the same guidelines that should be applied to all leaders - past performance, vision for the future, loyalty, in this case, to the Church, clean record, a proven ability to lead. Leadership candidates have their champions, and their detractors, so perhaps there is a little politics thrown in.

As you know, The Cardinals elect him. It is said that the chosen one does not have to be a Cardinal, or even a Bishop - a parish priest is eligible.

Have you read, "The Shoes of the Fisherman"?

Hi, Angeline.

The problem (for the possibility of change in the Church) is that this pope has now selected ALL the cardinals who will eventually replace him. It's as if over his eight years, Bill Clinton had been allowed to select all 535 members of the Electoral College for his successor.

Hi, DaveK,

As there are fewer entering the priesthood, perhaps one day there will be younger Cardinals with younger ideas.

I heard a Canadian priest opine that the seat of power would one day move from the Vatican to South America.

I wonder what a few folks here would think if the pope suddenly changed his mind about certain life extending medical research and asked for himself and his oldest cardinals to receive such treatment. Devil

Hi, Angeline.

That would NOT be an improvement, as the South American countries are even more stratified (rich vs. poor) than Europe, and the hierarchy exclusively comes from the upper class. Not exactly in accord with Christ's "preferential option for the poor!"

Surprised they haven't yet denounced Christ as an anti-papist. Devil
