Who decided that we now call Orientals, Asians?

Jul 1, 2007 9:35AM PDT

I was told the other day that I'm politically incorrect to use the word Oriental while referring to a human being from the Orient/Far East and that I should call them Asian. Who the hell decided that after several hundred years the word Oriental refers to rugs, art etc.... and not humans from that area? That's totally ridiculous!

When I use that word I do not intend any racial slur at all and I detest another insinuating that it's a slur/object. I'm sticking with Oriental.

I've not posted in SE for a long while, but I'm sure the place hasn't changed and will likely produce objective views on the matter.

They have a color called black and there are black people, so why not a flesh color for "white" people? I think the "flesh" color name was changed to "peach". Draw a girl from Georgia and she'll truly be a "peach" of a gal.

Plenty of good and rational thoughts in your post

Maybe we spend too much time trying to find faults with our ancestors or ancestry in general and maybe in an attempt to correct what was never broken in the first place. What some might see as historical flaws, others will see as a rich patina that adds character.... which we should cherish rather than cover up. Happy

as a complainer, but I do have opinions. Typically, something like this would not be an issue with me at all, but I got slammed twice last week for not being PC and the person the alleged PC-ness originated with seems to think that a law degree in its self constitutes correctness. lol I've enjoyed the debate and it's interesting to witness so many jumping becaused something is now being termed as PC. It doesn't seem to matter to them that the term is actually incorrect. I also asked a Russian friend of mine how he felt and he thinks its arrogance on their part. But, that's just his opinion, too. I'm not sure the Canadians object to our refering to ourselves as simply Americans, but they would have the right to object as would Mexico.

No.
Jul 2, 2007 5:03AM PDT

Ukrainians are Ukranians, not Russians. Many would be insulted to be called Russian.

The problem with this whole thing is that Asia has lots of different ethnic groups in it. If you specifically mean someone of Chinese/Japanese/Korean ethnicity (which used to be called Oriental) what do you call them to distinguish them for other groups?

personally, i call them russians.... as for asians, the only only time i see/hear the word is when "a gang of asian youths etc etc"

Is "Russian" an ethnicity?
Jul 2, 2007 5:16AM PDT

I think it's a nationality, as Ukrainian is. So if you are calling them Russians it's just inaccurate. Like calling an Irishman English.

i always thought that China/Japan/Korea were countries and therefore people from those countries would be Chinese/Japanese/Korean?

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, either on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or ancestry[1], or recognition by others as a distinct group[2], or by common cultural, linguistic, religious, or territorial traits.[1] Processes that result in the emergence of such identification are summarized as ethnogenesis.

The term is used in contrast to race, which refers to a classification of physical and genetic traits perceived as common to certain groups.[2]

It's not an exact science...
Jul 2, 2007 6:51AM PDT

but a person from China is racially/genetically/ethnically very similar to a person from Korea, as opposed to another "Asian" from Kazakhstan or Belorus, say. In fact he may be more similar to a Native American than to some other "Asians"

under the Soviets would disagree. Just one egregious example:
Stalin was a Georgian, which country had ancient enmities with the Ukraine. During his worst period he gave special attention to the Ukraine, inducing famine and pestilence. He killed more Ukrainians than Hitler killed Jews, and just as deliberately. That "Union" of Soviet Socialist "Republics" was almost as phony as the old Yugoslavia. Stalinist hatreds are still affecting politics in that area.

as a famous 'israeli' once said "i only become a 'jew' when i travel outside israel"

as far as i'm concerned, there are 250,000,000 'americans' in the USA, and 200,000,000 'russians' in russia....

if i meet them somewhere, they become 'texans' or 'ukranians' Happy

I was wondering what the objection was
Jul 2, 2007 2:55AM PDT

and found this explanation

http://www.answers.com/topic/oriental

It sometimes helps to know more about the underlying reason one is offended and it's quiet easy to be ignorant in that regard and feel oneself as being innocent of any charges. I have used both terms and never thought much of either. My desire would be to know which exact country a person is from but my embarrassment is that my eyes alone cannot tell....just as my ears can pick out an accent as being "southern" but I can't pinpoint the state. Perhaps a person from Texas or Tennessee could just as rightfully object to being called a "southerner" depending upon usage. Maybe they don't want to be associated with Floridians because it's just full of snowbirds.....OOPS....I mean part time and transplanted northerners. Shocked Guess I'm dead. See how that works? Happy

I'd prefer to call people their names! But if I HAVE to describe the person for some reason (never really had to do that! ALways referred to the person by name and character or personality) I will describe the person as he/she wants to be described.

As long as we continue to differentiate human beings because of the shape of their eyes, color of skin or size of their feet, we're going to have a society full of us vs. them. Obviously there are those who benefit in one way or the other from having a society where there are them and us.

My opinion is that there are more similarities than differencies between us all. We all have two eyes. We all have two arms. Two feet. Two ears. One head. Nails. Etc. We all need to eat. Drink. Urinate. Poop. Have sex (in one way or the other). We are all very much aloke. There are more things that unite us than there are separating us and I prefer focusing on the similarities rather than differencies.

(The above statements about our similarities are based on the fact that the normal way of being born is to be born with these things in common. I am aware of the fact that there are people being born without some important body parts, but that's not the norm but the exception.)
