Question

Which tablet would best suit my needs?

Jul 7, 2015 8:57PM PDT

We are going on a long auto trip in August. I would like to find a tablet that my daughter could use to play simple games (Match 3 or Hidden Object), watch videos, and/or possibly access the internet. I visited the C|net site and saw several that would probably fit our needs at varying prices. After reading the pros and cons and review statements, I realized there is sometimes a vast discrepancy between what the editors rating is and what the viewers have to say about various tablets. Realizing that the majority of users tend to give negative comments as opposed to praise, I simply need input on what to buy for Angie. I'd prefer to stay under $300 since she will probably not use it after this trip. (We have computers and cellphones that fill many of the tablet applications.)

I truly don't know which one to purchase. Please help!

Thanks so much! - Kitty

How about an Asus Transformer?

Why I headed back to the Transformers.

It's your comment about videos. The Kindle is very nice but I can't guess where you are getting your videos from. For the Kindle you get it from only one source.

Transformer for transients. :-)

Thank you for your response! I had never heard of the Transformer (never owned a tablet before). Asus had gotten my attention from the editor's review site, so I immediately looked this one up. Size is right, price is right...only glitch I can see is the detachable keyboard. It is a little heavier than the ones I have read about, but in a moving vehicle that might even be an advantage! Happy And if, as I hope, the keyboard still functions while detached......the best of all worlds!

Have a great day! And thanks for rescuing an ignorant stranger!

I have the Android Transformer.

When I unplug the base with the keyboard the onscreen keyboard kicks in. The really nice thing about the models I linked to is the huge 320 to 500GB HDD in the base. There's a big battery in there too so you can load it up with almost any video you have.

One more question about Transformer
Jul 8, 2015 8:12PM PDT

Sigh.....one final question (I hope!)......WHICH Transformer have you used? There are so many.....all similar but different. Some sites claim they are selling $650 tablets for $269. Other sites list nothing above $300 or $400. Okay, some laptop convertibles are around $600. As you can see, I've been searching the internet and trying to compare apples to almost apples. Happy.

So.....
Dear R. Profitt, which one do you use? If I know the model, I can pursue the best bargains. Right now, I am confused about which ones were made long ago (most of the reviews are 2 to 3 years old.) and whether any particular model is better than another. One small detail can make a huge difference in the longevity and/or performance. I did notice that Asus is a product of or affiliated with Gateway.

Thanks again for your continued patience.

How I use these are not mainstream.

The Android Transformer I have is from the office. We develop Android apps so it's in the collection so we know the apps work there. It's the older TF300T which answers which one I have.

In your case the ones with the 320 or 500GB HDD running Windows 8 would give you maximum flexibility with video and other content.

Sure you can get a current model and pay a lot more.

Kindle

I haven't seen the latest Kindles. Thank you for suggesting it. I will check it out this week when I am in Topeka. I was thinking of Kindles as simply a reading tool, sounds like it does much more.

Thanks for your response. Have a great day!!

Kindle

I just realized the screen on the Kindle is too small. 7" in a moving car with light fluctuations would probably not be large enough. But I AM going to check these out and find out if some might be larger.

Thank you again. - Kitty
