Which System To Go For?

Jun 20, 2006 11:36AM PDT

I'm trying to get a new system and I'm sort of on a budget.

Here are the 2 systems I'm trying to decided between with the differences in hardware.

I don't game much with Warcraft III or Battle for Middle Earth II probably being the extent I would play and not very often.

I know the Graphics cards are horrible but the monitors you get for the price seem appealing to me.

Suggestions?

At this point I really don't want to build.

Let Me Know
Jun 20, 2006 2:16PM PDT

Let me know what you think of it when you get it.

I checked and they are already giving the 35% off.

I'm in a hard spot because I want that Widescreen monitor but they are having problems with them and won't start shipping the fixed versions until after July 5th.

I believe the deal on the E 510 ends tomorrow.

I guess it'll be on sale again at some point. Rumors are that once Conroe is released in about a month all the other chips will go down so we should see even better prices.

I will try to let you know. my specs are farely similar 2 gig ram 3.2 PD x600HM 19 inch ultrasharp 160gig HD.

I know the problem with the dell 2007WFP is the color banding isue. dell is probably tring to fix it... I heard it was jjust a software/firmware issue, but if you want to see what the pannel looks like the apple 20inch is simaler (they use the same pannels

Good luck on the purchase ill try to post when i get the machine.

Get the Dell...
Jun 21, 2006 12:35PM PDT

...and upgrade the graphics card to a Geforce 7600GT. Stay away from the X600; it was a mid-range card 2 years ago, when PCI-E was just being introduced. And be sure to order the Windows reinstall disk, so you can have a clean copy of XP w/o all the bloatware.

Dell Deal Has Changed For The Worse!
Jun 21, 2006 11:46PM PDT

Guess I'll have to wait another week or get the Gateway because Dell's new deals are crap. That same system I had price around 1350 is now 1700.

Forget that LOL...I would go buy a high end gaming PC for that at GatewayHappy

Do they always change their deals every Thur?

New Gatweay vs Old one..Now Which one?
Jun 22, 2006 6:24AM PDT

Now that my Dell got ridiculously expensive I was looking at I've starting looking at the Gateway system at Best Buy. Here are the specs on it.

Gateway
AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 2.0GHz 2000MHz BUS
Win Media Center 2005
1GB Ram
250 GB HDD
300 Watt Power Supply
NVIDIA GeForce 6100 128 MB Shared
21? Gateway FPD2185W Widescreen
$1400.00

I thought about it and we order Gateways at work so I contacted my guy there and he quoted me this system:

Gateway
Pentium D 940 3.2 GHz 800 MHz FSB
Win Media Center 2005
1 GB RAM
200 GB HDD
400 Watt Power Supply
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 128MB, DVI, VGA, & TV-Out
Chipset ATI Xpress 200 Chipset with DDR2 Support
21? Gateway FPD2185W Widescreen
$1537.98

Other stuff I didn't put down are pretty much the same.

My Uses:

I'll play some strategy games (About all I play on PC)

Warcraft III
Battle for Middle Earth
Black and White
Empire at Wars.

I don't even game that often though so the most of what I'll be doing is:
Normal Use/Making DVD's Including Rendering and everthing. I also like to make graphics with Photoshop.

Opinions?

Ok have the E510.. my opinions
Jun 22, 2006 10:52AM PDT

here is a small review. (feal free to ask questions)

My specs: Intel 940, 2 gig ram, x600, 160 gig HD, 19 inch ultrasharp,
~$1000

Pros- Scilent (cant tell if its on or off), Fast... more on taht later, very good looking (i like the white), with the ultrasharp panel alot of USB ports, an seams to run cool

Cons- No firewire, no cad reader (not a bigie for me), Video card could be better, price without a coupon is crazy.. (i had a coupon)

Review...
I started it up i was "wowed" by its speed. it booted fast and it was scilent if you place your ear by it you here a small fan but thats it. My model had no bussing and blowing no "FX 5800 Ultra"ing. the loadest part was when the 7200RPM HD fires up.
next, being the BF2 freak i am i fired the thing up with BF2. it loaded fast...... i started it and i play it on medium/high seting with native 1200 res. it is silky and great for me (remeber i moved up from a gefoce 5200). but it felt like 40FPS though i didnt run fraps and have no desire to.
i am going to run photoshop on it although i have not. I am sure it will run fast hehe cant wait! im loving every moment with this computer.
i have always had great experences with dell and i do like the company. this computer was build in one day and shiped in 2. i bought it with 3-5 day shiping =).
the ultrasharp FP is amazing need a say more?

well all i can say is happy buying, i was happy with the purchase! well I dont realy like this keyboard they gave me, weird feal... but other then that i think this si the computer for me.

My Dilema...Keep us updated.
Jun 22, 2006 11:17AM PDT

I'm kicking myself for not hopping on this while it was still a good deal. Even though they are still giving $350.00 off the price of it it seems like they raised the price of all the component upgrades which is making it much more expensive. It's looking like for $200 more dollars I can get the Gateway system with their widescreen. It's not looking good for dell's WS monitors. Still all kinds of problem in DVI even with the new ones. I've decided if I don't see any better deals my early next week I'm probably going to get the one the guy at Gateway quoted me.

Keep us updated on your thoughts of the E510 in the coming days.

Photoshop
Jun 22, 2006 12:45PM PDT

How does photoshop run? That's something I'll probably use quite a bit.

The more I think about it the gateway direct will prob be the winner.

Alot are saying go AMD for games but I like XP pro and would probably upgrade it eventually but Media Center can't be upgraded so I would have to buy it down the road. I think I'll save more money in the long run if I get the PD system with the better graphics card.

How much RAM did you get on yours? I'm think I might get 1 GB Ram and add more myself.

here is my opinion
Jun 22, 2006 7:56PM PDT

That gatewat PD looked preaty nice. All of the people are saying go AMD for games without a high end vid card you wont notice a diference at all in games.
im going to load Photoshop now so ill post later on that.
about the Media Center OS, I realy like it. it has already made a useful interface for me.

Ohh and by the way I got 2 gig RAM.

Photoshop test...
Jun 22, 2006 8:17PM PDT

I started up elements 4 ( a nice piece of software) and first thing i noticed was its quick start up time. When i got in photoshop i quickly opened a picture and started using endless filters on it. there were quick but it seamed teh same as my regualar P4 3.2. as i did more it seamed to hold up unlike my P4 that would halt. the PD940 jsut kept going... looking at CPU usage photoshop set its self to do all the filters on the second CPU it was calulating as my other one was free to do, whatever. then i used the bandade thingy tool to try to get my RAM usage up. it ran nicely didnt get my CPU close to half, and didnt use anymore tehn 512 RAM. so those were my 20 mins with photoshop. ask questions if need be.

and also i just heard the AMD cpus have had compatibility isues with many things. (heard this in Newegg customer reviews)

Gateway PD it is then.
Jun 22, 2006 11:54PM PDT

I think I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger..I do more of these type of things anways...not gaming.

I read some apps have issue with the Dual Core but then you just have to set that app to run on one core only and it works fine.

Went With A Different Gateway
Jun 23, 2006 6:52AM PDT

Well I jumped on a Gateway system today.

I went direct and actually didn't get either of these systems.

After I started looking into the DX310X I noticed that 2GB was the max and it only had 2 512 slots. So to upgrade to that 2GB I would then have to get rid of the 512 slots and get to 1 GB sticks. What a waste.

So in moving the DX up to 2GB it was getting really close to the next model up so that's for $200 more I got all the DX had to offer but a better chipset. Max of 4GB with faster RAM Speeds. 600 Watt instead of 400 watt PSU. Same graphic card but if it doesn't meet my needs now I have more room to upgrade. And 2X the HDD space unlease I keep the Raid config which I might.

Here's the specs:

yellow diamond Operating System: Genuine Microsoft

SAVE SOME MONEY UP FRONT
Jun 24, 2006 9:06AM PDT

Buy an E 310 with the high-end P4 and 2 Gigs. They'll throw in the 17-inch flat panel. Then, they'll give you a coupon for $125.oo off of a larger monitor. Sometimes, you can get that deal with the larger monitor from get-go.
There are several PCI Graphix cards available that are affordable, and will adapt with that system. You will have to disable the IG - correctly.
A lot depends on the game format. I still have IG in mine. Some of the games look fantastic (even 3D) and some of them just plain suck.
Keep in mind also, that you are going to have to install a super-duty CPU cooling fan with either of these systems. Those processors tend to heat up - a lot.
It's ***-for-tat between AMD and Intel. I have systems with both. Each has its moments.
Do some more research. E 310 is an underrated machine.
Mine rocks.

YOUR THE FIRST
Jun 26, 2006 1:57PM PDT

I talked with a Colonel out on base today - he's got that. Says it runs hotter than he expected. He's got his 1st Sargent Computer Guru installing a new processor fan as we speak.
Carry on.
I know all about the BTX Case - I'm sitting right next to one - with a brand new drive bay fan it that I installed today. My temps were running 104 - 112 F. My temps have not exceeded 97 F after leaving the system on for the past 12 hours and multitasking my system to death.
You tell me.

I'll post my thoughts.
Jun 26, 2006 4:11AM PDT

For any interested that happen upon this thread I'll post my thoughts on my Gateway when I get it.

I really wanted to go dual core since I do a lot of graphics editing/dvd authoring.

Some parts are back order so I won't be getting my PC until the 6th of JulySad It's not too far away and maybe it'll ship sooner which I've seen them do in the past.

My Thoughts
Jul 10, 2006 4:21AM PDT

So far so good. I received my system and it's working great. Man does this thing load Photoshop fast.

I installed Warcraft III and it works fine. I actually stretches the game to widescreen and it looks fine to me.

I'm very happy with my purchase so far.

The only negative thing I've found so far was the nice keyboard they sent was PS/2 and not USB and the cord was really short...
