Resolved Question

which speakers would be better?

Nov 16, 2011 7:37AM PST

I just bought a Dell Inspiron i620 desktop that came with Dell speakers. I already had Harman Kardon speakers that came with my old Dell that I had purchased back in 2002. My question is can I use my Harman Kardon speakers with my new desktop? Are they better than the Dell speakers? The HK's have 2 small speakers + one wolfer (?) where I can adjust the Bass, Treble & Surround. The connection on the new speakers is one small single prong plug in and one USB connection (and there are 2 small speakers). The HK's have 2 single prong plug in's and I see nowhere to plug both of these into my new desktop. I have just set this up and only listened to the new speakers with using the music preloaded on the computer, but they don't sound as good as I remember the old HK's sounded.
Thanks for any advice.

I was thinking one had to be a USB

So they can both be plugged into one? I don't need to use a USB (like the new speakers have)? I was thinking they had to be plugged into separate connections.
Thanks for your reply

A Stereo Splitter...

...has one jack that divides the signal between both speakers.. If you look closely at the stereo jack, it has two separate sleeves/colored rings that cause the two speakers to be connected in stereo to the computer.

And yes, there are also USB connectors which will do the same thing but you'll still need a Y adapter of some type. The one I suggested is cheaper and should work.

Hope this helps.

Only YOU Can Determine Such a Thing

Speaker preference is entirely a personal preference.. As long as the speakers plug into the jack correctly (you need to purchase a stereo splitter adapter/Y cable to help with the two plugs to one issue) and emit sound, then you will have to determine which ones sound the best.

When purchasing the splitter cable, be sure it's the correct size, probably a 3.5 millimeter (about 1/8 inch) diameter TRS plug. Take along a working cable to be sure you've got the right diameter and length.. See an example at the link below:
