Question

Which processor for video editing

Apr 27, 2015 3:03AM PDT

Buying a new laptop for general use, some light gaming and video editing. I read elsewhere that multi-threading is what video editing works best with. Which processor would be better for video editing a 4th gen i7 with quad core or a 5th gen i7 with dual cores?

For example:

4th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ Quad Core Processor + Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600

vs.

5th generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5500U Dual Core Processor + NVIDIA GeForce 840M 2GB Discrete Graphics

Answer
Both work.

You can hit CPUBOSS.com to compare the two but usually the entire machine matters more than a move from one i7 to another i7. Both i7s have multithread capability.

The dedicated GPU and one newer gen i7 may win if all other things are equal (disks and RAM.)

PS. Get reviews on the laptops.

Some laptops have less than color correct displays and for video work (my son does that!) we outfitted him with a Pantone Huey so the video color work would be spot on.
