WHICH PRINTER FOR A MAC? URGENT HELP MUCH APPRECIATED!

Aug 1, 2007 10:49PM PDT

Hello, fellow c/netters!

I have a new iMac and am using Mac OS X 10.4.9. (my first time on a Mac) I URGENTLY need to buy a printer, preferably Epson, and am so confused by the different reviews I have read as to their compatibility with 10.4.9 and also whether they can print on thick card to make greetings cards.

I am considering the Epson Stylus Photo R1400 and R1800. I need to print excellent colour photos, incl. glossy, and b/w documents and would like to print on CDs and DVDs. Being able to print on card paper is really important.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you!

Just back from an Apple Store.

Yup they had those models on display there. This may not mean much to you but when you see it there it means that it should "just work."

Check epson.com for drivers and OSX version compatiblilty. (I didn't do this for you.

Has anyone printed on card paper with the Epson1400 or 1800?

Thank you for your reply which was appreciated.

Unfortunately where I live we do not have an Apple store and most people do not speak English. There is an Apple phone number but they don't speak much English either. So I have to rely on the web for information. I was originally looking at the Epson 1400, 1800 and 2400. On the Apple website, someone wrote about the 2400:

"When I upgraded to 10.4.7, it didn't work. I had to download from epson a printer system which still didn't work except for one copy only of a picture. Epson couldn't fix it and neither could two people from Apple. Sooo, I brought the whole heavy mess in to apple and it didn't work with their intel either. I am afraid to download upgrade to OS 10.4.8. Apple genius bar told me that we just have to wait for Epson to finally write a new system for our computers and it could take 3 months to a year for Epson to get "around to it" Meanwhile, I have a beautiful white elephant printer sitting idle and I am "s.o.l." I couldn't believe that Apple store is even reccommending this to be sold when it will only work with older macs. If you check apple support discussion group and write in epson r2400, you will find a bunch of people saying the same thing as I am."

So, from what he is saying, not all printers sold in the Apple store "just work" with the latest iMacs.

Has anyone out there printed on card paper with the 1400 or 1800 with good results? Thanks.

Card paper did feed ok.

But the "good" is in the eye of the beholder and depending on the card stock finish and the printer settings means I can't tell you if you'll like it.

I take it you didn't check the epson.com web site.

Goto Apple.com and look for printers

I would recommend going to Apple.com and looking at what printers they sell there. Either buy it from Apple.com, or write down the model numbers that interest you and you should be fine.
