My husband is android and I'm iPhone. We're able to exchange messages/photos through the standard messaging app. The only thing is I can't tell if he's responding right away but don't find that really necessary.

Answer
I think you want a social network app..

If you want to know when he actually see the messages, most of the social network apps have this function. Facebook messenger for example, which works on both iPhone and android.
I am not familiar with the other apps mentioned. All are free, if they don't work delete them and try another till you find one you like. (I don't think whatsap works on iOS)
