Jan 31, 2010 3:32AM PST

Finally I am planning to go for Canon 7D (body only) but confused to buy which a lens which will solve my purpose. Again I am not a professional photographer but want a good lens which will give me good quality photo in a day to day life. Please suggest which ZOOM lens is fit best for my purpose.

can't tell you

I would suggest the 15-85IS(not 17-85IS) lens as a good walk around, but you may be fine with a lesser lens. The 15-85IS is a good consumer lens for the APS-C sensor cameras for Canon. Why did you choose the 7D? Do you plan on shooting sports or birds in flight. If you don't plan to shoot either then you'd be better off with a lesser body and spend the money on the lens.

Lenses for Canon 7D

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8L IS and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS are my two most favorite zoom lenses for an APS-C size camera like the 7D. I use them all the time on my older 30D body.

I use the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS for my newer 5D Mk II instead of the 17-55mm lens. For Canon lens purchase, you have to decide whether you may upgrade one day to a full frame camera. If you do, then the EF lenses may be a better investment than the EF-S lenses for you.

If money is not a limiting factor, then definitely the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens, it is a class above the 15-85mm lens. There is no contest between the two in terms of image quality and low light performance.

Best zoom lenses for Canon 7D
Feb 7, 2010 12:30PM PST

You have been asking this question several times. So perhaps you need a better explanation why you want to spend some extra cash for a better lens to justify your purchase.

I'm not quite sure why you need the 7D, perhaps you need the fast and great low light AF performance, or maybe you have money to spend and like to get one of the best consumer D-SLR short of the pro line.

The 7D is a very capable camera, it has an excellent 19 point cross type AF system, with the center point extra sensitive for the f/2.8 lenses cross type AF. It also has excellent high ISO performance with low noise. So it is a camera built for great low light performance that is often needed for indoor sports photos without flash. You can keep shooting a night soccer game when others have given up and packed away their D-SLRs. But to take advantage of this caliber performance, you need a fast zoom lens with f/2.8. So if this is what you're after, then getting the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS are the two zoom lenses that can help you to realize the full potential of the 7D. Getting other cheaper and slower zoom lenses will handicap your 7D's performance. If you plan on getting slower and cheaper zoom lenses, then you won't really need the 7D, instead consider the 50D or even the entry level D-SLR.

Lens choices

It depends on your spending budget and whether you want to upgrade to full frame in the future.

If you have no intention to upgrade to full frame, then the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is a better match for the 7D. The 24mm end of the EF lens will not have much wide angle on the 7D body. The 17mm end and the IS of the EF-S lens are two nice features to have. I have used the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens a lot during the past few years and liked it a lot.

If money is not a significant issue, then the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is really a better match for the 7D. And when you upgrade to the full frame, then you can get the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or another general purpose lens, and leave the EF-S lens on the 7D. But if you think that this is wasteful, then get the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and if you need wide angle then also consider the EF 17-40mm f/4L or 16-35mm f/2.8L II. You can use these lenses on a full frame body in the future.

Purchase

I don't think you will find much discount on the Canon 7D.
It is still a hot item.
There is a possibility of a discount on the lens.

Check Amazon.com to find the target price.
They usually have a good price on cameras.
If you find a price much lower than theirs, be careful.

bhphotovideo.com is a trusted website and they do have competitive prices.

on line retailers
Feb 13, 2010 12:02AM PST

I usually use bhphotovideo.com, then adorama.com and amazon.com. For amazon.com, I usually buy from Amazon, not their 3rd party vendors.

Canons have rebates twice a year. You missed one of them last month. The next one is around fall.

Beware of online retailers that give more than usual discounts, they usually make you spend on other junks and wipe out any possible savings you think you may get.

Also buy those items with US warranty if you reside in US, don't buy the grey market products. Internation warranty of the grey market products may not be honored by CanonUSA.
